BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team finished second at the Angry Birds Invitational, the first of three consecutive Mountain Hawk home meets, on Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Monmouth finished the day in first place with 191 team points, followed by Lehigh (141), Penn (113) and Winthrop (66). The Mountain Hawks were strong in the distance events, highlighted by senior Jimmy Miller's IC4A qualifying time in the 3000 meter run.
"I'm pleased with how we competed," said head coach Matt Utesch. "The kids ran tough and we had some really nice bright spots. Our distance kids are tough as nails and have done a phenomenal job of adjusting to the track in a short amount of time after the cross country season."
Miller, who was sidelined for cross country season with an injury, impressed in his first competition since last year with an IC4A qualifying mark of 8:25.96 in the 3000 meter run. Miller's time also set a new standard for Rauch Fieldhouse.
"I was very impressed with Jimmy's run," said Utesch. "He showed great resolve after being injured through cross country season and really made a statement today."
Sophomore Evan Ward claimed a first-place finish in the 5000 meter run to begin the day, crossing the line in a new personal-best time and Rauch Fieldhouse facility record of 15:27.03. Senior Ryan Knouse finished in third place in the event with an impressive time of 15:41.20. Junior Ryan Mahalsky was Lehigh's highest finisher in the mile run with his time of 4:21.50 that was good for fourth place.
The quartet of Mahalsky, Mitchell Biler, Nicholas Molloy and Tyler Mueller ran the distance medley relay in 10:28.12 to claim first place.
Senior Martin Otieno finished second in the 60 meter dash with a mark of 7.00 seconds, just .02 seconds off the IC4A qualifying standard. Otieno also claimed second in the 200 meter dash, clocking in at 22.39. Junior Christopher Watson claimed another second-place finish for Lehigh with his time of 1:57.15 in the 800 meter run.
Junior Derek Gaul placed second in the long jump with an impressive launch of 7.00m, just narrowly missing the IC4A qualifying mark of 7.02. Senior Paquin followed right behind in third place with his 6.93m jump. Paquin was also the highest Mountain Hawk finisher in the 60 meter hurdles, placing fourth with a time of 8.67 seconds. Junior Adeolu Adesida finished second in the high jump with a launch of 1.99m.
The Mountain Hawks remain home next weekend to host the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday.
