Lehigh cruises to strong 111.50-69.50 win over rival Lafayette

BETHLEHEM,Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team claimed 13 wins in the 17-event Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet en route to a dominant 111.50-69.50 victory over the Leopards on Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse. The strong win was highlighted by two Mountain Hawks qualifying for the IC4A Championships in March.
"We ran phenomenal times and it was a true team effort," said head coach Matt Utesch. "The kids had great scores and really cleaned up. It was a hugely well-rounded effort and we got it done in all events."
Senior Martin Otieno ran an IC4A qualifying time of 6.97 in the 60 meter dash to claim first place and tie his personal best. Otieno was also victorious in the 200 meter dash with his time of 22.46, which was just .20 seconds shy of another IC4A qualifying mark.
Junior Adeolu Adesida and senior Patrick Ciez each jumped an IC4A qualifying mark of 2.04m in the high mark, but Adesida did so in fewer turns to claim the victory while Ciez took second. Freshman Daniel Boardman placed third in the event with his 1.89m jump.
Lehigh swept the top three places in both the long jump and triple jump, with senior Ryan Paquin's 6.89m launch coming out on top in the long jump and junior Julian Copeland's mark of 13.62m victorious in the triple jump.
Paquin claimed his second victory of the day in the 60 meter hurdles with a clip of 8.51. Sophomore Christopher Coffin followed in second place with his time of 8.75.
Freshman Lucas Warning claimed his first collegiate win in the shot put, with a throw of 14.71m, while junior Ryan Rhodes followed in second (14.27m).
Junior Justin Mahoney sprinted 400 meters in 50.29 to cross the line in first place, while freshman Christopher Del Rossi took second place (50.81). Junior Christopher Watson finished first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.46, over two and a half seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Senior Tyler Mueller raced his way to a first-place finish in the 3000 meter run with a mark of 8:27.18. Mueller was followed by junior Ryan Mahalsky (8:31.49) and sophomore Sean Burke (9:03.63) in second and third place, respectively. Junior Stephen Keith finished atop the podium of the 1000 meter run with his clip of 2:36.49. Senior Jimmy Miller barely missed out on first place in the mile run, crossing the line in 4:21.33, just .15 seconds behind Lafayette's Thomas Day.
The quartet of Otieno, Mahoney, Watson and Del Rossi ran away with the 4x400 meter race, crossing the line in 3:34.14. John Ciavardelli, Nicholas Molloy, James Clements and Jimmy Miller claimed another Lehigh victory in the 4x800m relay with a time of 8:18.91.
The Mountain Hawks will remain home next weekend to host the John Covert Classic before hitting the road the following weekend to participate in the Armory Collegiate Invitational.
