BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams will host rival Lafayette in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. inside Rauch Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawk men look to rebound after last year's loss to the Leopards, while the women aim to claim their sixth straight victory over Lafayette in the teams' lone dual meet of the indoor season.
"This meet is where most of the marks that we use for Patiot League Championship seeding come from," said head coach Matt Utesch. "It's all because the kids are so fueled by the rivalry. Our kids are ready to go and it's great to see how their motivation changes because they're racing Lafayette."
"It's also neat to think about how many people have participated in this rivalry over the years," Utesch continued. "It's really something special. This meet is so important and fuels some great performances."
Both Lehigh teams are coming off second-place finishes at the Angry Birds Invitational last Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Each team fell to first-place Monmouth, but was able to edge out visiting Winthrop and Penn. The Mountain Hawk distance runners impressed, combining to win six events.
On the men's side, senior Jimmy Miller, who was sidelined with an injury during cross country season, impressed in his first competition with an IC4A qualifying mark of 8:25.96 in the 3000 meter run. Miller's time also set a new standard for Rauch Fieldhouse. Sophomore Evan Ward and the distance medley team also claimed victories.
Senior Martin Otieno claimed a pair of second-place finishes in the 60 and 200 meter dashes, while Junior Christopher Watson also placed second in the 800 meter run. Junior Derek Gaul and senior Ryan Paquin placed second and third, respectively, in the long jump while junior Adeolu Adesida claimed runner-up in the high jump.
Senior Brooke Astor impressed once again for the Mountain Hawk women, turning out her season's second ECAC qualifying mark. This time, Astor qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.75.
Senior Hannah Pierce, sophomore Elizabeth Weiler and classmate Jennifer Markham were all victorious in their respective distance events, while senior Danielle Albergo claimed a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.
The Lafayette men hold a 14-9 all-time advantage against the Mountain Hawks, while the Leopard women lead the series 15-7-1.
Following the dual meet, Lehigh will remain home to host the John Covert Classic on Feb. 1 inside Rauch Fieldhouse, before hitting the road the following weekend to compete in the Amory Collegiate Invitational.
