Lehigh to host Loyola and Navy this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team will enter its second weekend of Patriot League play as Loyola and Navy come to town for showdowns in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks will battle league newcomer Loyola on Friday night at 7 p.m., while the Midshipmen will follow on Saturday at 4 p.m. Lehigh will look to improve on its 2-1 Patriot League record and 10-4 season mark.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off their first road trip of the season last weekend in which they downed Holy Cross in straight sets and lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Army. Lehigh battled back and forth with Army through five sets on Friday but the Black Knights were able to outlast the Mountain Hawks and grab the win. Lehigh rebounded nicely on Saturday as it shut down the Crusaders to claim its second Patriot League win.
Lehigh ranks fifth in the nation and first in the Patriot League with 1.98 service aces per set. The Mountain Hawks also lead the Patriot League with 12.57 assists per set, and rank second with 13.40 kills per set. Juniors Kaylynn Genemaras and Jade Van Streepen lead the way for the Mountain Hawks with 130 and 129 kills, respectively. Sophomore Amy Matula has tallied 446 assists, already eclipsing her total from all of last season. Senior Rachel Charles has notched 169 digs and sophomore Ana Vrhel has recorded 32 total blocks.
Loyola carries a 3-9 record into Friday night's match, which will serve as the Greyhounds' first ever Patriot League game. The Greyhounds are coming off a 3-0 beating of Wofford at the University of Arizona Wildcat Classic last weekend, as well as a pair of 3-0 losses to Arizona and UC Santa Barbara at the tournament. Loyola is led by senior Faye Lukas with 114 kills followed by Jac Bullock with 103. Junior Lauren Andersen has tallied 304 assists while Micah Duzey has notched 114 digs.
This will be the tenth all-time meeting between the Mountain Hawks and the Greyhounds, with Lehigh holding the 6-3 advantage. Lehigh downed Loyola in straight sets in the teams' last meeting in 2010.The Mountain Hawks will look to claim their fifth straight victory over Loyola on Friday night.
Navy will enter the weekend with a 5-7 record and 1-0 league record. The Mids will play at Bucknell on Friday night before they head to Bethlehem on Saturday. Navy recently toppled Lafayette in straight sets to win their Patriot League opener. The Mids are led by senior Erin Fortner with 142 kills and 11 service aces. Sophomore Alex Karika has tallied 385 assists while freshman Alli Graf has notched 183 digs.
Saturday's match will be the 49th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Navy holding the 27-21 advantage. Navy claimed last season's first match, 3-2, while Lehigh rebounded nicely to grab the season's second match 3-0. The Mountain Hawks will be searching for their eighth win over Navy in the last nine contests.
Following this weekend's homestand, Lehigh will remain home to host defending Patriot League Champion Colgate next Friday (October 4) at 7 p.m. before traveling to Bucknell on Saturday (October 5).
