Mountain Hawks split two matches in Crosstown Invitational

9/13/2013 8:46:00 PM | Volleyball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team split two matches on Friday as part of the Crosstown Invitational, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Quinnipiac 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-18) in straight sets and fell to Morgan State 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 14-25, 25-13, 13-15).

"The team was up and down, but in the second set of the second match we played a flawless game," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "That's the best game we've played so far this season. We're not as consistent and disciplined as we need to be, but we'll continue to work on that."

The Mountain Hawks captured a commanding straight set victory over Quinnipiac to end the first day of the Crosstown Invitational inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a dominant lead in the first set to find themselves up 12-4. From there, Lehigh never let the Bobcats get within six as the Mountain Hawks walked away with a 25-14 victory. Sophomore Claire Bradshaw notched three service aces in the first set, while the team accumulated a hitting percentage of .296.

The second set was even more impressive for Lehigh as it recorded 15 kills and no errors, to give it an astounding .652 hitting percentage. Once again, the Mountain Hawks never let the Bobcats get close as they closed out the set on a 4-0 run to capture a 25-12 victory and take a 2-0 advantage.

The third set was a bit more of a battle between the two teams as they found themselves tied at 18. Lehigh regained momentum and scored seven straight points to close out the set 25-18 and notch the 3-0 victory.

The team finished the match with a .276 hitting percentage and recorded eight service aces as well as seven team blocks.  Junior Jade Van Streepen led the way with eight kills, while Amy Matula recorded 23 assists.

The Mountain Hawks began the day against Morgan State, who dealt Lehigh a 3-2 loss. The first set was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Lehigh held the largest lead of the set at four points before the Lady Bears slowly evened it up and were able to claim a 26-24 victory on a kill by Arianna Hayden. Van Streepen recorded nine kills in the opening set to lead Lehigh.

Lehigh jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the second set. The Mountain Hawks held onto the lead for the rest of the second set and a kill from freshman Kianna Carroll put away the 25-16 victory, evening the match up at one.

The teams exchanged points in the early goings of the third set until Morgan State went on a 10-0 run to jump out to a commanding 21-11 lead. The Mountain Hawks were able to grab three more points before a kill from the Lady Bears' Haly McClure and a Lehigh attack error gave Morgan State the 25-14 victory and 2-1 advantage.

The momentum switched yet again in the fourth set when Lehigh stringed together a 6-1 run early on to take a 10-5 lead. The Lady Bears were never able to recover as the Mountain Hawks claimed a dominating 25-13 victory. Lehigh had a hitting percentage of .290 during the fourth set, which proved to be its best of the match.

Lehigh led 7-5 early on in the deciding set before Morgan State went on an 8-2 run to lead 13-9. The Mountain Hawks notched three more points before the Lady Bears won the set 15-13 to claim the match victory.

Van Streepen recorded a double-double for the second straight match, finishing with 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior Amanda Clark returned from an injury for the first time to notch eight kills, while Kianna Carroll finished with a .429 hitting percentage and eight kills of her own. Freshman libero Mariah Brantley recorded 26 digs and six assists, as she saw her first start in place of injured Rachel Charles. Matula notched 25 assists in the match. Bradshaw recorded three of the team's eight service aces, giving her six on the day. As a team, Lehigh finished the day with 16 total service aces.

The Mountain Hawks return to action tomorrow with day two of the Crosstown Invitational. They will take on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 10 a.m. and Marist at 4 p.m. Both matches can be seen on Lehighsports.com via the Patriot League Network.
