Mountain Hawks clinch regular season title with Saturday sweep

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh softball program clinched its 17th Patriot League regular season champion and second in as many years with a doubleheader sweep of Colgate Saturday at Eaton Street Field. The Mountain Hawks took the opener 7-2 and won the nightcap 3-0 to improve to 33-14-1 overall and 15-3 in the Patriot League.
 
Lehigh will host the Patriot League Tournament May 9-11 at Kaufman Field.
 
Senior Liz Lucas had a pair of RBIs in each game, giving her 164 for her career, which puts her one behind Kim Miller '96 for the Lehigh and Patriot League career record.
 
Freshman Alexis Watanabe went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead Lehigh in the opener, while sophomore Emily Bausher fired a three-hit shutout in the nightcap.
 
The Mountain Hawks struck for two runs in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded double by sophomore Cassie Waggy.
 
Colgate (15-27, 9-9 PL) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Emmie Dolfi and a RBI single by Natalie Siedhof, but Lehigh scored five runs over the next four innings and kept the Raiders at bay.
 
Freshman Morgan Decker added two her Patriot League-leading RBI total with two more in the opener. Her fielder's choice in the second game the Mountain Hawks a 3-2 lead, and she followed a Watanabe RBI single with an RBI single of her own in the fifth. With an RBI in the nightcap, Decker now has 43 RBI on the season. Lucas also drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to center in the fourth.
 
Lehigh pounded out 12 hits in the opener, with Bausher (2-for-3) and Watanabe accounting for half.
 
Senior Becca Bliss earned her 18th victory of the season, allowing two runs on nine hits. She walked one and struck out one as she improves to 18-6.
 
Courtney O'Connell took the loss for Colgate, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in 3.1 innings.
Lehigh scored all three of its runs in the first two innings of game two. Decker picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice after senior Rosie Roessel reached on an error and stole second. Lucas struck again with the bases loaded and two out in the second, driving home freshmen Jessica Calvini and MacKenzie Velasquez with a two-run single.
 
Bausher struck out ten and walked just two en route to her sixth shutout of the season. The right hander did not allow a hit through the first five innings and worked out of a second and third, no-out jam in the sixth without allowing a run. Bausher is now 13-6 on the season.
 
Megan Carnase took the loss for Colgate, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in a complete game effort. Calvini and Velasquez led Lehigh with two hits apiece in the nightcap.
 
The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will wrap-up their series and the Patriot League regular season with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon from Eaton Street Field.
