Lehigh completes regular season with sweep at Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team closed out the regular season with two wins over Colgate Sunday to sweep the four game series at Eaton Street Field. The Mountain Hawks took the opener 7-0 behind a seven-hit shutout from senior Becca Bliss and junior Ashley Quigley, and then rallied from 1-0 to score three times in the seventh to win the nightcap 3-1.
 
The Mountain Hawks head into the Patriot League Tournament having won 12 straight games, and finished the month of April with a 21-2 record. Lehigh heads into the postseason at 35-14-1 overall and 17-3 in the Patriot League. Colgate (15-29 overall, 9-11 Patriot League) will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming tournament.
 
Lehigh scored single runs in each of the first four innings in game one and added two in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Mountain Hawks also capitalized on six Colgate errors in the opener.
 
Freshman Morgan Decker went 3-for-4 in game one and her first inning RBI double drove home senior Rosie Roessel to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. Roessel also went 3-for-4 and drove in Lehigh's second run with a second inning bunt single. Lehigh capitalized on three Raider errors to score a run in the third, while senior Lucas' single and a Raider error gave Lehigh a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings.
 
The Mountain Hawks had 14 hits in game one. Sophomore Emma Capetz had a one out single in the fifth and then scored on a double to left center by freshman MacKenzie Velasquez. A two-out infield single by Roessel scored Velasquez to give Lehigh a 6-0 edge. Sophomore Cassie Waggy added an RBI single in the sixth to cap the scoring for Lehigh in the opener.
 
Bliss capped a second straight unbeaten Patriot League regular season shutting out the Raiders on five hits through five innings. Quigley closed out the game with two scoreless innings of two hit relief. Bliss and Quigley combined to strike out five Raiders while issuing zero walks.
 
Game two started as a pitcher's duel between sophomore Emily Bausher and Colgate's Brigit Ieuter. Lehigh had base runners in five of the first six innings but could not muster a run. The Raiders took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth as Marissa Dowling singled home Tera Vaughn.
 
Lehigh finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Capetz and Velasquez reached with consecutive one out singles, Pinch hitter Jessica Calvini flied out to right for the second out, but Roessel drove in Capetz with the tying run with an RBI single. Freshman Alexis Watanabe then doubled down the right field line, scoring Velasquez and Roessel with the go-ahead runs.
 
Bausher retired the Raiders in order in the seventh to close out the sweep. She allowed a run on four hits while walking one and striking out nine as she improves to 14-6. Ieuter took the loss allowing three runs on eight hits.  Velasquez went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, keying an eight-hit Lehigh attack.
 
The Mountain Hawks will open the three-day Patriot League Tournament against Colgate on Thursday, May 9 at Kaufman Field. Lehigh has won the last two Patriot League Tournament titles and has won seven of the last night overall. Game times for the tournament are still to be determined.
