Lehigh falls to Army 62-52, will be No. 5 seed in PL Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. – In its final regular season game, the Lehigh women's basketball team fell to Army 62-52 Saturday at Christl Arena. Army outscored Lehigh 43-26 in the second half and held the Mountain Hawks offense scoreless from the field for the final 6:33 of the game. Lehigh drops to 14-15 overall and 6-8 in Patriot League action with the loss. The Mountain Hawks will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
Senior Kelly Peterson lead the Mountain Hawks with 17 and freshman Kerry Kinek also finished in double figures with 10 points. The Mountain Hawks were without sophomore Katie O'Reilly who was injured in Wednesday night's loss at Navy. Lehigh lost the turnover battle however, committing 19 compared to Army's eight. “We didn't take care of the ball, they made some big shots down the stretch and that was kind of our Achilles heel the last three minutes of the game,” said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan.
The Knights (22-7, 11-3 PL) scored 26 points off the Mountain Hawks' miscues and were led by Anna Simmers' 21 points on 35 percent (7-for-20) shooting. Kelsey Minato registered 17 points to go along with three steals and Jen Hazlett pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
The Brown and White sank a pair of three point shots on their first two possessions and contained Army's attack from behind the arc. The score was tied for the third time with 5:45 left in the half before Peterson and Army's Jean Parker traded three-point shots. From that moment on the Mountain Hawks went on a 7-0 tear to end the half up 26-19. Three-point shooting decided the first half, as Lehigh shot 50 percent (4-for-8) from behind the arc while Army converted just 13.3 percent (2-for-15) of its three point attempts.
By the 16:43 mark of the second half the Mountain Hawks had extended their lead to 13 with a three from junior Lindsey Hoskins, but the Knights cut the lead to eight with a Simmers three more than a minute later. A Hoskins layup capped a 9-4 run for the Mountain Hawks after that, but Lehigh would relinquish a 13-point lead the rest of the way. Army rattled off a 12-2 scoring spree in which the Black Knights forced three Lehigh turnovers. The Black Knights took the lead for good at 3:28 on a pair of free throws from Simmers, who registered a 4-for-4 performance from the charity stripe and scored six points during Army's game-ending 10-0 run.
As the No. 5 seed, the Mountain Hawks will play No. 4 seed Holy Cross Thursday night in a Patriot League quarterfinal at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The Patriot League tournament seeds were finalized at the completion of all games Saturday night. The winner of the Lehigh-Holy Cross game will face the winner of No. 1 Army and No. 8 Colgate in the semifinals March 11.
