Mountain Hawks coast to 62-40 victory over Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight game, the Lehigh women's basketball team took the lead less than a minute into the contest and never looked back as the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 62-40 victory over the Colgate Raiders on Saturday night. On Play 4 Kay night, the Mountain Hawks raised $2,829 towards female cancer research and awareness, courtesy of Lehigh Gas.
We played well defensively tonight," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. "It was an all-around solid game by our kids. We're playing with confidence and it was an overall strong team effort."
Freshman Kerry Kinek finished as the leading scorer for the Mountain Hawks, tallying a game-high 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, coupled with seven boards. Lehigh put two other players in double figures as juniors Hilary Weaver (12) and Lindsay Hoskins (11) each eclipsed double digits on the night.
As a team, Lehigh shot 36 percent from the field and capitalized off of the Raiders' mistakes, turning 16 turnovers into 17 points, while outscoring Colgate in the paint 26-23 and 16-13 off the bench.
In the first half, the Mountain Hawks ran out to a 5-0 lead over the first 1:17 and posted multiple four-point advantages, but the Raiders battled back to tie the game at 18 at the 10:43 mark. That would be the last time Colgate would get itself within striking distance as the Mountain Hawks eventually built a 12-point lead and took a seven-point advantage into the break.
Kinek was the first half's leading scorer, dropping 10 points over the first 20 minutes, while Hoskins added six before the break. The Raiders scored 12 points in the paint over the first 20 minutes, outscoring the Mountain Hawks by four, but Lehigh held a 21-19 edge in the rebounding facet and scored eight points from the charity stripe.
The Mountain Hawks started the second half on an 11-2 run to open up a 41-25 lead on the Raiders, causing Colgate to burn a timeout after Weaver raced the length of the floor for a fast break layup. Colgate battled back, cutting the score to 11 with 11:37 to play, but another Lehigh run put the Mountain Hawks back up by 18 at 50-32 less than two minutes later.
"Simplicity is good for this team is good and offensively we were executing," said Troyan. "Taking Kerry away from the basket has helped her a lot of made her more effective."
Lehigh coasted the remainder of the game, keeping Colgate at a double figure disadvantage over the final 9:58 for its fourth Patriot League victory, the second over the Raiders this season. The victory was Lehigh's first inside Stabler Arena since January 7 (58-33 over Columbia) and the 15th out of the last 16 against the Raiders.
Additional donations were collected from fans as well as a portion of the proceeds from concession sales will also be donated towards the cause.
Lehigh will now hit the road for a trip to Sojka Pavilion on Wednesday, February 20 for a 7 p.m. tip with the Bucknell Bison. Both Bucknell and Lehigh will enter with 4-6 marks in the Patriot League, with the Bison holding a slight edge as they knocked off the Mountain Hawks 53-37 on January 23.
