
Lehigh powers past Colgate and NJIT in home opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team won 15 of 16 events to post a pair of wins in the Mountain Hawks' home opener Saturday at Jacobs Pool. Lehigh defeated Patriot League foe Colgate 180-73 and downed NJIT 222-53 to improve to 3-2 on the season.

"What a great day," said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. "The men worked hard today to improve to 3-2 for the season. I'm very proud of this team. Very proud!"

Junior Danny Bennett won three individual events to pace the Mountain Hawk effort. He started his day by leading a top three Lehigh sweep in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.37. Junior Owen Dunbar and freshman Jacob Moyar finished second and third respectively. Bennett later added a win in the 500 free in 4:47.22 and led another sweep in the 200 IM. Bennett posted a winning time of 1:57.72 with junior Jake Greene and sophomore Jacob Hassel finishing 2-3.

Greene captured the first individual event on the men's side, taking first place in the 1000 free in 10:01.24.

Sophomore Matt Carducci had a strong day with a win in the 100 back in 53.87. Carducci also finished third as part of a Lehigh sweep in the 200 back and finished second in the 100 fly.

Freshmen continued to shine for the Mountain Hawks as Moyar, Jamal Willis and Kevin Huntley all won individual events. Moyar took the 200 fly in 1:55.50 with Hassel finishing second, and then won the 100 fly in 51.89.

Willis led a sweep in the 50 free, clocking in at 21 seconds flat. He was followed by classmate Justin White and junior Martin Kendig. The one event Lehigh failed to win Saturday was the 100 free, but Willis led a 2-3-4 Mountain Hawk finish.

Huntley posted a time of 1:02.13 to win the 100 breast and added a win in the 200 breast in 2:15.19.

Lehigh's other individual win went to junior Sean Brant, who led a sweep in the 200 fly. With freshman Justin Kostelnik finishing second.

In the two relay events, Lehigh posted 1-2 in both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. Kendig, Hassel and Willis teamed with senior Matt Chrzanowski to take the 200 medley relay in 1:38.12, while the 400 free relay team was comprised of White, Kendig, Chrzanowski and Willis. Their winning time was 3:16.83.

Junior Dan Bateman swept the diving events scoring 231.30 points in both the one meter and three meter events.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action at the Princeton Open, November 15-16 in New Jersey.
