Lehigh welcomes Colgate and NJIT Saturday in home opener

10/31/2013 5:44:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams will host Colgate in the Mountain Hawks' home opener Saturday with NJIT also visiting to face the Lehigh men. The meet will be held at Jacobs Pool with diving events set for 10 a.m. with the remainder of the meet to follow at 1 p.m.

The Lehigh men went 1-2 in the opening weekend of competition, beating Bloomsburg and falling to West Chester on Friday and then falling 170-126 to Rider on Saturday. Freshman Jacob Moyar had an impressive individual performance winning two of the four events Lehigh won on the day, capturing the 200 yard butterfly and the 200 yard individual medley. Classmate Jamal Willis provided Lehigh with its third victory in the 50 free in 21.19 with senior Chris Hoke finishing right behind him. Moyar also won the 200 fly against West Chester and Bloomsburg, while Willis captured the 50 free in back-to-back days. Junior Danny Bennett also captured two individual events for the Mountain Hawks on Friday.

The women have kicked off the season on the right foot, currently sitting at 3-0, including the Mountain Hawks' first win over West Chester in over a decade. Last time out Lehigh defeated Rider 193-103 with sophomore Courtney Patterson and freshmen Kaitlyn Ruffing and Kelly Carroll leading the way. Patterson won three individual events while Ruffing and Carroll both won two. Lehigh won 14 swimming events of the 16-event meet against the Broncs with Ruffing setting a Coppola Pool record in the 50 free with a time of 23.87. Junior Alissa Leung also swept the backstroke events and finished second to Carroll in the 200 IM.

Saturday's meet will mark the season opener for both the Colgate men and women. The men struggled last year failing to win a meet, finishing the season at 0-11 as the Raiders went on to finish sixth at the Patriot League Championships. The women had an impressive season finishing third at the Patriot League Championships with a final dual meet record of 9-3.

NJIT's men will also open their season on Saturday. The Highlanders finished the season just under .500 last season with a final record of 5-6.

Lehigh has won 19 straight meets against Colgate on the men's side, while the Raider women have won six-in-a-row against the Mountain Hawks, with Lehigh's last win coming in the 2004-05 season. The Mountain Hawk men defeated NJIT 142-63 last year at Jacobs Pool.

Following this weekend, the Mountain Hawks will return to action in two weeks as they will participate in the Princeton Open, November 15-16 in New Jersey.
