
Lehigh women open season with two wins Friday

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team opened its season with two victories in a tri-meet Friday at Graham Natatorium. The highlight for the Mountain Hawks was their first win over West Chester in over a decade as Lehigh downed the Golden Rams 128.5-97.5. Lehigh also posted a 159-55 win over Bloomsburg.

Freshman Kaitlyn Ruffing won two individual events as Lehigh captured eight of 13 events in the meet. Ruffing won the 50 yard freestyle in 24 seconds flat and took the 100 in 52.55. Sophomore Carolyn Koch finished second in a dead head behind Ruffing in the 100 and also finished second behind freshman Kelly Carroll in the 200 free. Carroll's winning time was 1:55.68.

Sophomore Courtney Patterson and freshman Cora Summerfield paced Lehigh in the distance freestyle events. Patterson won the 1000 free in 10:26.82 with Summerfield finishing second, while the roles were reversed in the 500 free with Summerfield winning in 5:07.70 and Patterson finishing second.

Junior Mary Samuels led a top three sweep in the 200 yard butterfly, winning the event in 2:10.81. Carroll finished in second place well another freshman, Valerie Lauer placed third. Junior Alissa Leung finished second in a pair of events, the 200 IM and the 200 back.

Lehigh also won both relay events. In the 400 medley relay, Leung, Samuels and Ruffing teamed with sophomore Rebekah Campo to win in 3:57.61 Koch, Carroll, Summerfield and Patterson combined to win the 400 free relay in 3:37.69.

The Mountain Hawks will close out their opening weekend of competition at Rider Saturday at 1 p.m.Â
