
Mountain Hawks continue hot start with 193-103 win at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team is off to its best start in over a decade as the Mountain Hawks moved to 3-0 with a 193-103 win over Rider Saturday at Coppola Pool. Sophomore Courtney Patterson won three individual events while freshmen Kaitlyn Ruffing and Kelly Carroll both won two individual events to pace the Mountain Hawk effort. Lehigh won all 14 swimming events in the 16-event meet.

Patterson swept the distance freestyle events, taking the 1000 free in 10:30.21 and the 500 in 5:10.09. Freshman Cora Summerfield finished second to Patterson in both events. Patterson also led a Lehigh 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 yard butterfly winning in 2:09.86 with junior Mary Samuels and freshman Valerie Lauer taking second and third.

Ruffing pulled off the 50-100 yard freestyle double, setting a pool record in the process. The Murrysville, Pa., native set a Coppola Pool record clocking in at 23.87 seconds in the 50 free a time just .21 off Carolyn Koch's school record. Ruffing won the 100 free in 52.87 with Koch finishing second.

Carroll captured the 200 free in 1:56.61 and the 200 IM in 2:13.55 and also finished second in the 100 fly as part of a top three Lehigh sweep. Carroll finished just .05 seconds behind Samuels who took first place in 59.30 and ahead of sophomore Rebekah Campo, who finished third.

Junior Alissa Leung also won two events, sweeping the 100 (1:00.26) and 200 (2:11.00) yard backstroke events, while finishing second behind Carroll in the 200 IM.

In addition to her third place finish in the 100 fly, Campo won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:08.65, while sophomore Melissa Feeney won the 200 breast in 2:29.39.

Lehigh also won both relays with Leung, Campo, Samuels and Ruffing teaming to take the 200 medley relay in 1:50.14 and Ruffing, Koch, Patterson and Carroll winning the 400 free relay in 3:37.39.

The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule next Saturday when Lehigh welcomes Patriot League foe Colgate to Jacobs Pool for a 1 p.m. meet. Â
