BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh field hockey assistant coach Susan Ciufo helped lead the U.S. Indoor National Team to the Rohrmax Cup Title last weekend as Team USA posted a 4-1 record, including a 3-2 win over Slavia Prag in the Finals. Ciufo finished the tournament with three goals and a number of assists as the United States picked up its first-ever International Tournament win in thrilling fashion.
Ciufo scored a goal in each of the United States' first three games, all wins. Last Friday (Jan. 4), the U.S. topped Austria U21 (6-1) and Rot-Weiss Wettingen (4-2). The squad then beat SV Arminen by a 4-1 final as Ciufo scored her third goal of the tournament.
In Saturday's final game, the U.S. lost to Slavia Prag 6-1 in a battle of unbeatens, but had a rematch on Sunday and wouldn't disappoint.
The United States went on to win the women's final, 3-2. The U.S. took a 3-1 lead, forcing Slavia Prag to pull its goalkeeper with eight minutes remaining. That pushed Ciufo back to play defensively as her impact went far beyond goal-scoring throughout the tournament.
The victory gave the United States its first International tournament victory as the team continues to work towards its goal of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup.
A 2011 graduate of Drexel, Ciufo has been reunited with a number of college teammates on Team USA: Kim Tunell ('11), Amanda Fleischut ('13) and Lindsay McArdle ('14). The head coach of the U.S. is Drexel's Denise Zelenak. Ciufo enjoyed a standout career with the Dragons, highlighted by a 2009 campaign which saw her post 21 goals and 51 points.
