BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team will compete in a pair of meets this weekend as the Mountain Hawks will head to the prestigious Penn Relays Thursday-Saturday while Lehigh will also host the Lehigh Games on Goodman Campus Friday-Saturday. Lehigh is coming off a pair of stellar weekends and will look to keep the momentum going into its final weekend before the Patriot League Championships.
Between the Larry Ellis Invitational and the Greyhound Invitational last weekend, Lehigh set several personal records while a 10-year-old school record also fell.
Evans Kosgei placed eighth in the 3000m steeplechase in Princeton with a time of 8:52.41, surpassing the previous school record of 8:54.72 which was set in 2002 by Alex L'Heureux. The time also qualified Kosgei for the IC4A Championships, well surpassing the time of 9:15.00 needed to qualify. The IC4A Championships will be held at Princeton on May 11-13.
Kosgei's time currently ranks No. 10 in the event in the the NCAA Div. I East Outdoor Qualifier List, as the top 48 qualify for bid to the NCAA Championship which will take place June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa. Kosgei's time is also currently No. 19 in the nation.
For his efforts, it was announced Monday that Kosgei was named the Patriot League Male Runner of the Week.
James Miller also had a success weekend, seeing a personal record in the 5000m run with a time of 14:22.97 which led him to a 27th place finish at the Larry Ellis Memorial. His time also qualified him for the IC4A Championships.
At the Greyhound Invite, Lehigh took first in three events. Stephen Rumizen won the long jump with a distance of 2.01m. In the 3000m steeplechase, Lyle O'Brien placed first with a time of 9:27.61 and the third event winner was Seth Robinson, who won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.97. Robinson also placed second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.03, less than a second behind first.
It will be the 118th edition of the Penn Relays, which are held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Lehigh will be facing the best collegiate athletes in the country.
In last year's Penn Relays, Lehigh had some stellar performances led by Kosgei who placed sixth overall in the 3000m Steeplechase Championship.
While some Mountain Hawks compete in Philadelphia, others will be part of the Lehigh team that hosts the Lehigh Games on Goodman Campus which will feature 17 teams including the likes of rival Lafayette, Seton Hall, Monmouth, Saint Joseph's, Moravian and East Stroudsburg.
The men's and women's javelin and men's and women's hammer throw will take place Friday starting at 4 p.m. while the rest of the events will begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
After this weekend, Lehigh will head to Worcester, Mass. for the Patriot League Championships, which will take place Friday, May 4-Saturday, May 5.
