EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team extended its winning streak to six and completed a series sweep of Lafayette by taking two more games from the Leopards Sunday at Metzgar Fields. The Mountain Hawks totaled 18 runs and 27 hits in the two games, taking the opener 7-0 and the nightcap 11-3 to move to 19-13 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League.
With Sunday's wins, Lehigh has now won 11 straight over Lafayette in softball. The Mountain Hawks' senior class owns a 17-1 career record versus the Leopards.
In game one, freshman Emily Bausher and sophomore Kelsey Lee combined on a two-hitter, while Bausher helped herself with her first career home run. After belting two home runs and driving in seven in Saturday's game two victory, senior Jen Colquhoun went 3-for-4 in the opener to pace the Lehigh offense.
Colquhoun helped the Mountain Hawks take the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Rosie Roessel led off with a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Audra Wood. Colquhoun singled to center to score Roessel and after a walk to senior Julie Fernandez, Lehigh's senior shortstop scored on single by junior Liz Lucas.
Lehigh tacked on two more runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Lucas and a RBI ground out by freshman Cassie Waggy to extend its lead to 4-0.
Bausher took care of the rest for Lehigh, allowing just two hits and a walk in six innings, while striking out ten to improve to 9-7 on the season. In the fourth inning, Bausher followed a leadoff double by senior Tenley Halaquist with a home run down the left field line to put the Mountain Hawks up 6-0. Fernandez capped the game one scoring for Lehigh with a sixth inning single that scored Wood.
Sunday's nightcap saw Lehigh pound out 17 hits with Roessel, Wood, Lucas and Waggy recording three apiece. Lucas belted three doubles and drove in four runs to pace the offense. She put Lehigh up 2-0 in the first inning with a two-run double that scored Roessel and Wood. Lehigh added to its lead in the second inning on a Wood RBI infield single.
Lafayette (4-16 overall, 0-4 Patriot League) scored its first run of the day on a fourth-inning RBI single by Alex Campanaro, but the Mountain Hawks broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning. Colquhoun capped her stellar weekend with a two run homer to right center, her ninth of the season, to put Lehigh up 5-1. The lead grew to 9-1 on a two-run double by Waggy and RBI singles by freshman Brandi Hawkins and junior Kristen Mitchell.
Gwen Turner prevented a Lehigh mercy rule victory with a two run home run off junior Rebecca Bliss in the sixth inning, but in the top of the seventh, Lucas drove in two more runs with a double to right center to put the Mountain Hawks back up by eight.
Bliss picked up her seventh win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Lehigh outscored Lafayette 35-4 in the series sweep and totaled 51 hits, including 11 doubles and four home runs in the four games.
