LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – After seeing its six game winning streak end with a game one loss, Lehigh bounced back to defeat Rider 5-2 in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split Wednesday at Herb & Joan Young Field. Senior Audra Wood had two hits and two RBI in game two as Lehigh moves to 20-14 overall. The Mountain Hawks fell 6-3 in Wednesday's opener.
Lehigh gave up an unearned run in the first inning of game two but answered back with three runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good. With one out, junior Rosie Roessel singled to center, scoring freshman Emma Capetz. Wood then followed with a single up the middle scoring junior Kristen Mitchell. Roessel eventually came home with the Mountain Hawks' third run on an illegal pitch.
The Broncs brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but junior Becca Bliss got Ally Coryell to ground out to second base to end the game. Bliss (8-5) won her seventh straight decision with a complete game effort as she allowed two runs (one earned) on ten hits, striking out five and walking one.
In game one Lehigh was unable to hold on to leads of 2-0 and 3-2. Allysen Breeden gave the Broncs the lead for good with a fifth-inning three run home run to left off of freshman Emily Bausher.
The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning as Audra Wood scored on a wild pitch and senior Julie Fernandez singled home classmate Jen Colquhoun. Rider pulled even behind a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Alyssa Paul and a single by Sam Pugh.
Colquhoun put Lehigh back in front with her tenth home run of the season, a solo shot to left, in the top of the fifth before Breeden struck for Rider with the third of three consecutive one-out hits for the Broncs.
Rachael Matreale limited Lehigh to seven hits and struck out six to earn the victory. Bausher was dealt with the loss, dropping to 9-8 after allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits in six innings. She struck out four and did not walk a batter. Colquhoun and Fernandez had two hits apiece to lead Lehigh in the opener.
The Mountain Hawks will host their first Patriot League series of the season this weekend when Bucknell visits Kaufman Field for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start with live audio coverage of both games on Lehighsports.com.
