EASTON, Pa. - The Lehigh softball team got off to a quick start and rode that momentum to a doubleheader sweep, topping archrival Lafayette, 8-1 and 9-0, on a chilly Saturday. The Mountain Hawks (17-13, 2-0 Patriot League) scored five first-inning runs in game one before senior Jen Colquhoun blasted home runs in each of her last two at-bats for a five-inning victory in game two.
“I thought our players did a great job of coming out and playing to their ability level,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “We got off to a great start in game one. Then in game two, Jen Colquhoun had a tremendous game at the plate and Emily Bausher pitched a tremendous game. We felt really good about the start.”
Both Lehigh pitchers were stellar Saturday as junior Becca Bliss allowed only six hits and one run in game one before freshman Emily Bausher hurled a five-inning shutout in game two, allowing only two hits while striking out eight.
Junior Rosie Roessel, freshman Emma Capetz and junior Liz Lucas had two hits apiece in game one to pace the offense. Lucas led the way with three RBI while senior Julie Fernandez reached base in all four plate appearances with a double and three walks.
The Mountain Hawks used a five-hit first inning to get off to a quick start in game one, and their Patriot League season. Colquhoun drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Roessel who opened the game with a bunt single. Fernandez then doubled in Lehigh's second run before Lucas and Capetz followed with an RBI single and double, respectively. Capetz went on to score on an error to make it 5-0.
Lafayette hung around, pulling within 5-1 after four innings, but Lucas hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth to give Lehigh a six-run advantage. Freshman Brandi Hawkins added an RBI single in the seventh, good for the 8-1 final.
Lehigh struggled to plate runs early in game two, stranding seven runners over the first three innings. But Colquhoun changed that in a big way. With the bases loaded and one out, Colquhoun cleared the bases with one swing, hitting a grand slam to left-center field. Senior Tenley Halaquist, who began the rally with a leadoff single, came up for a second time and drove in two more with a single up the middle to make it 6-0.
Bausher continued to dazzle on the mound, and Colquhoun hit a three-run homer in the fifth, to give Lehigh the 9-0 victory. Fittingly, the game ended with a pop out to Colquhoun.
Colquhoun's seven RBI marked a new career high as she finished 3-for-4 in game two. Roessel posted her second two-hit game of the day, while senior Audra Wood and freshman Cassie Waggy also tallied a pair of hits to spark an offense which finished with 13 base knocks.
Lehigh will return to action on Sunday as it faces Lafayette in another doubleheader with the first game beginning at 12 p.m.
“Every league game is an important game,” said Troyan. “We need to come back here ready to play tomorrow.”
