KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Lehigh offense posted 19 runs on 30 hits as the Mountain Hawks extended their winning streak to three with a pair of wins Monday at the Rebel Spring Games. Junior Rebecca Bliss fired a one-hit shutout as Lehigh downed Sacred Heart 7-0 in its first game of the day, while the Mountain Hawks erased an early 5-0 deficit with 12 unanswered runs in a 12-5 triumph over South Dakota.
With the Monday sweep, the Mountain Hawks are now 4-6 on the season.
After freshman Emily Bausher no-hit South Dakota on Sunday, Bliss took the ball in Monday's opener and promptly surrendered a leadoff double to Nicole Sidor. That would be the only hit of the game for the Pioneers as Bliss only allowed a leadoff walk to Annie Dreher in the second from that point on. Bliss nabbed her first win of the year (1-2), striking out six in a complete-game effort.
Offensively, Lehigh pounded out a season-high 19 hits, with seniors Jen Colquhoun and Julie Fernandez recording three apiece to lead the way. The Mountain Hawks scored four times in the top of the first inning, on run-scoring singles by Fernandez and junior Liz Lucas as well as an RBI double by freshman Cassie Waggy.
Lehigh added to its lead in the second as Colquhoun singled home senior Audra Wood and again in the third as senior Tenley Halaquist scored an unearned run on the second of three Sacred Heart errors. The Mountain Hawks tacked on a seventh run in the sixth when sophomore Jess Long singled home Lucas.
Game two did not start as well for the Mountain Hawks as South Dakota tagged sophomore Ashley Quigley for four runs over the first two innings. Coyote first baseman Alexa Rudeen had an RBI single in the first inning and added a three-run homer in the second to put USD up 5-0.
Waggy (2-for-2, four RBI), helped Lehigh back into the game with a two-run single in the fourth, but the Mountain Hawks blew the game open in the fifth scoring ten runs against a trio of Coyote pitchers. RBI singles from Wood and Fernandez brought Lehigh within 5-4 and then Wood came home on a passed ball to tie the game. Waggy put the Mountain Hawks in front with a two-run single, while three batters later junior Kristen Mitchell added a two-run single as Lehigh extended its lead. After a wild pitch, a South Dakota error and Wood's second RBI single of the inning, the Mountain Hawks had their seven run lead which they would not relinquish. Wood and Fernandez joined Waggy with two hits in the nightcap as head coach Fran Troyan juggled his lineup, moving junior Rosie Roessel into the leadoff spot, dropping Wood to the second slot and everyone else behind her down a spot.
Freshman Emily Bausher relieved Quigley in the fifth inning and pitched two innings of no-run, one-hit relief to earn her second win in as many days (2-3). Bausher walked one and struck out four in her two innings of work. Sophomore Kelsey Lee pitched a scoreless final inning for the Brown and White.
The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday when they face Saint Francis (Pa.) at 9 a.m. and Detroit at 1 p.m.
