Lehigh drops another heartbreaker in Wolfpack Challenge finale

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Lehigh softball team suffered another tough loss on the final day of the Wolfpack Challenge as the Mountain Hawks let a 2-0 lead get away in a 4-3, eight inning loss to Georgetown Sunday at Dail Stadium. The two teams combined for four home runs, but Georgetown's Mackensey Carter tied the game with a two-run blast in the sixth, and Shikara Lowe put the Hoyas ahead with a two-run shot in the eighth.
Senior Jen Colquhoun and junior Liz Lucas homered for the Mountain Hawks, who fell to 1-5 on the early season. Lehigh led in all six of its games in North Carolina, but frustratingly have only one win to show for it. The Mountain Hawks also out-hit the Hoyas 9-3 on Sunday, but left seven runners on base.
Lucas opened the scoring with a leadoff home run to center field in the second inning, her first of the season. Colquhoun capped a strong overall weekend at the plate with her second long ball of the year, a solo shot to center with one out in the third. Freshman Emily Bausher started in the circle for Lehigh and struck out eight Hoyas while allowing just three hits, but four walks aided Georgetown's comeback effort. Bausher walked Lowe with two outs in the top of the sixth, and Carter proceeded to tie the game with a two-run home run to left center.
Lehigh could not capitalize on a Lucas leadoff double in the sixth, and the Mountain Hawks put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh but Lauren O'Leary got Colquhoun to line into a double play to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
With the international tie breaker rule in effect, the eighth inning began with Alexandria Anttila on second base. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third. Bausher then struck out Elyse Graziano for the second out, but Lowe struck with a two-run blast to left center to give Georgetown its first lead.
The bottom of the eighth began with Colquhoun on second for Lehigh. Senior Julie Fernandez reached on an infield single, and then a groundout by Lucas moved the tying runs to second and third. Bausher brought home Colquhoun with an RBI ground out to shortstop, but junior Jacqi Kennelly flied out to right to end the game.
O'Leary earned the win for Georgetown, allowing three runs on nine hits in eight innings. She struck out three and walked one for the Hoyas, who move to 7-5 on the season. Bausher survived the weekend with the lowest ERA on the Lehigh staff at 3.38 after 18.2 innings of work, but took Sunday's loss, falling to 0-3 on the season.
All three of Lehigh's captains, Fernandez, Lucas and senior Audra Wood recorded two-hit days for the Mountain Hawks, who will return to the diamond next Sunday when they travel to Kissimmee, Florida to play ten games in six days as part of the Rebel Spring Games. Next Sunday Lehigh will face Indiana State at 11 a.m. and South Dakota at 1 p.m.
