RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Kristen Mitchell drove in a pair of runs and sophomore Ashley Quigley struck out seven in a complete-game effort as Lehigh picked up its first win of the season, 4-1 over Toledo Saturday at the Wolfpack Challenge at Dail Stadium. The Mountain Hawks let a 5-0 lead get away in a 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh Saturday morning, but with the win over Toledo, Lehigh improves to 1-4 on the season.
In the second inning sophomore Lizzy Odren drew a leadoff walk and then came around to score on a one-out double to left by Mitchell.
Lehigh added to its lead in the sixth on a Mitchell RBI single to center and then Kristin Taft scored the Mountain Hawks' fourth run when senior Jen Colquhoun reached on an error.
Quigley pitched well en route to her first win of the season (1-1) as she allowed just a sixth-inning solo home run to Morgan Smith among three Rocket hits. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
Things started well for the Mountain Hawks in Saturday's opening game against Pittsburgh. Five of Lehigh's first six batters reached base via singles, including an RBI base hit for freshman Emily Bausher. The seventh batter of the frame, senior Tenley Halaquist, drilled
a grand slam to center field to put the Mountain Hawks up 5-0 after half an inning.
Pittsburgh (3-2) began to cut into Lehigh's lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. An error by Bausher allowed Niki Cognigni to score from third base. Kelly Hmiel and Carissa Throckmorton added RBI singles to cut Lehigh's lead to 5-3 after three.
Throckmorton hurt Lehigh again in the fifth, tying the game with a two-run triple to right field that plated Kristen Cheesebrew and Holly Stevens.
Junior Rebecca Bliss went the first 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Bausher came in and got Lehigh out of the fifth inning. Bausher ran into trouble in the sixth as the Panthers loaded the bases on a hit, a fielder's choice and a walk. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Bausher walked Cheesebrew to force in the go-ahead run.
Bausher tried to start a Lehigh rally in the top of the seventh, with a two-out single. She moved into scoring position on a walk before Savannah King got Halaquist to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game. Bausher took her second loss of the season, allowing a run and a hit in 1.2 innings. She struck out three Panthers while issuing a pair of walks. King earned her second win over the Mountain Hawks in as many days with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Lehigh actually out-hit Pittsburgh by a 10-9 margin with Bausher and junior Liz Lucas leading the way with two hits apiece.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up play at the Wolfpack Challenge on Sunday when they face Georgetown at 9 a.m.
