BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will open its 2012 season one day earlier than expected as the Mountain Hawks have added an extra game against North Carolina State, Thursday at 6 p.m. at Curtis and Jaqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks are slated to play five additional games in Raleigh, N.C. as part of the Wolfpack Challenge.
Lehigh is coming off a Patriot League Championship season in 2011 that saw the Mountain Hawks post a 33-23 record and advance to the NCAA College Park (Md.) Thursday's game will be Lehigh's second straight against an ACC foe as the Mountain Hawks' 2011 campaign ended with a loss to Maryland. Lehigh and NC State have never met in softball.
NC State begins its third weekend of play with its first home games of the new season. The Wolfpack are 3-5 on the season, going 3-1 at the Red and Black Showcase in Athens, Georgia, before dropping all four of their games last weekend at the Texas A&M Tournament. NC State was 26-22 a year ago, falling to Maryland in the opening round of the ACC Tournament.
In addition to Thursday's season-opener, the Mountain Hawks have contests scheduled against Kent State and Pittsburgh on Friday, Pittsburgh and Toledo on Saturday and Georgetown on Sunday.
A complete preview of Lehigh's six games at the Wolfpack Challenge will be available Thursday morning.
