Seniors Colvin, Loughery honored for performance in rivalry win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a 38-21 Lehigh victory over Lafayette in what became the final game of the Mountain Hawks 2012 season, two seniors were honored by the Patriot League for their strong performances Saturday. Quarterback Mike Colvin was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week while linebacker Sam Loughery earned Defensive Player of the Week laurels.
Colvin was also recognized Monday as the Sports Network's national Offensive Player of the Week.
Colvin led a terrific Mountain Hawk effort in the second half of the win over Lafayette as he threw for two touchdowns and 145 yards after halftime as Lehigh outscored the Leopards 21-0 in the final 30 minutes. Colvin filled up the stat sheet with a career high-tying 362 total passing yards in the game and completed 25-of-41 passes, while throwing four touchdowns. The senior also totaled a career-high 82 yards on his 11 rushing attempts and added a rushing touchdown.For his efforts, Colvin was also named the game's Most Valuable Player. Colvin's 75-yard touchdown pass to Lee Kurfis was the longest pass play of his career and the longest play of the season for the Mountain Hawks.
In his lone season as Lehigh's starting quarterback, Colvin completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 3,108 yards. He threw 19 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Colvin also rushed 106 times for 479 yards and a team-best 11 touchdowns.
Loughery also closed his Lehigh career with a strong game, as the senior led Lehigh's defense to a dominant performance over the final three quarters. After allowing 21 first quarter points, Loughery and the Mountain Hawks kept Lafayette off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Over the final three quarters, Lehigh only allowed Lafayette to register 176 yards of total offense.
Loughery spearheaded the terrific effort by making 10 tackles (four solo), 0.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and a key fourth quarter interception that he returned for 13 yards. The interception was the first of his career and the only turnover of the game forced by the Lehigh defense.
The Pittsburgh native finished second on the Mountain Hawks with 83 tackles in just nine games. He added 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks to go along with Saturday's interception.
The Mountain Hawks victory was the fifth consecutive win over Lafayette and put Lehigh's final record at 10-1, making it three consecutive ten-win seasons for the Mountain Hawks. Colvin, Loughery and the rest of Lehigh's senior class close their careers with a 35-13 overall record, Patriot League Championships and playoff victories in 2010 and 2011 and a 4-0 record against Lafayette, becoming the tenth class in Lehigh history to go 4-0 against the Leopards.
