Lehigh set for crucial weekend at Colgate and #23 Albany

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following three straight losses, the Lehigh field hockey team will look to bounce back when it travels to Colgate Saturday (11 a.m.) and Albany Sunday (2 p.m.). Despite dropping their first two league games, the Mountain Hawks would jump right back into the Patriot League Tournament mix with a win on Saturday. Lehigh then plays its final nonleague game of the season at #23 Albany Sunday.
Lehigh and Colgate both enter Saturday's game with 0-2 league marks as both are eying crucial victories. Meanwhile, the Great Danes will mark Lehigh's second nationally-ranked opponent of the season (thus far). Albany enters with a 6-7 record, but ranked 23rd nationally after earning several wins over strong foes.
Last time out, the Mountain Hawks hung tough against perennial Patriot League power American, playing scoreless field hockey through the first 20+ minutes while allowing only two Eagles' shots. However, the American offense came alive to down Lehigh, 9-2. Junior Emily Torcivia and freshman Erin Ricker scored the Mountain Hawks' goals, both assisted by senior Kim Eng.
The Raiders enter with a 2-10 overall record, earning wins over Siena and Saint Joseph's by identical 5-1 finals. They've dropped their last three games, falling to Bucknell (7-0), Cornell (3-2) and Lafayette (6-1). Leading Colgate's offense is Lauren Dittman with a team-high six goals and 14 points while Halle Biggar is right behind with five goals and 11 points. Amanda DiDomizio has started all 12 games in the cage, owning a 4.15 goals against average and .709 save percentage.
Colgate holds a 16-13-1 lead in the all-time series, which began with a 2-2 tie back in 1983. The sides have alternated wins over the last eight meetings. The Mountain Hawks earned a big 2-1 win last season while the Raiders were victorious last time Lehigh was in Hamilton. Lehigh is eying its first win at Colgate since 1996.
Meanwhile, Albany enters the weekend 6-7; the Great Danes will travel to Fairfield Friday before hosting the Mountain Hawks Sunday. Albany has faced a tough schedule this season in facing six ranked squads and beating two of them (Louisville and UMass). Corrine McConville (seven goals, one assist) and Jessica Longstreth (three goals, nine assists) lead the team with 15 points while Daphne Voormolen is right behind with 13 (six goals, one assist). Kristi Troch has played every minute in goal so far, owning a 1.95 GAA And .677 save percentage.
Albany has won the only meeting between the two sides, downing the Mountain Hawks 5-1 in the 2003 season opener.
Following this weekend, Lehigh will return to league action for the final two weekends of the regular season. The Mountain Hawks will travel to Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 20 before hosting Lafayette on the 27th.
