Pison On the Move
We asked Nick to share his experiences with us.
You have been an active participant in our Intramural and Club Sport Programs throughout your undergraduate years at Lehigh. Can you share what you have been involved in?
I have played Club Lacrosse all four years. My sophomore year I was Risk Manager. Junior year I was VP, and this year I am President.
For Intramurals, Freshman year I was part of the Freshman Overall champion Dravo ABC team for most sports, and for other sports I ran a team of guys from my pledge class in Delta Tau Delta. I have participated in every sport for Delta Tau Delta since then.
What other Campus activities or organizations are you currently or have been involved with?
I am a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. I have served as Risk Manager, Director of Academic Affairs, and President. I am also a Gryphon in M&M.
Outside of school, I am the Head JV and assistant varsity lacrosse coach at Emmaus High School in Emmaus, PA.
Do you find it difficult being so involved?
It can be overwhelming at times, but I think I handle it well. I enjoy everything I am involved in and, in the end, I think it has benefited me and prepared me for things after college.
Is it hard to keep up with your classes and grades, or do you feel that you balance them well?
At times it is hard to balance everything, and every once in a while I have to sacrifice free time to make sure I get everything done. Though it always works out and I've been able to keep my GPA pretty high and was accepted into grad school here at Lehigh. So I guess I do alright.
How has participating in our Campus Athletics programs helped to enrich your college experience?
I think it has given me something to keep me busy and given me opportunities in leadership positions. I chose Lehigh solely because of academics. As an All-American lacrosse player in high school, this was a tough decision to come here because it was the only school I applied to in which I wouldn't have competed in NCAA lacrosse. Being a part of intramurals and the club lacrosse team satisfied my want for organized athletics, while also giving me the time to pursue other things such as Greek life.
How has our programs helped you to make connections and friendships with people that you otherwise probably would have never met?
As an English major, I am one of the few. As a member of a Greek organization, my friends are mostly in my selected house. Being a part of the club lacrosse team has allowed me to meet people in every other major and other fraternities.
What inspired you to become so involved?
I seem to be a leadership junkie. I don't like to admit it, but I like to be in charge. When I was a freshman, I had a good relationship with the then-president of the club team, Andy Friedman. Then, the team didn't have much holding it together. I organized a helmet order for Andy and the team so we would look a little more official on the field. Since then, I feel that the team has grown tremendously in terms of organization, largely due to Andy, myself and the other two presidents who served during my time here, Ricky Appel and Andrew Wright.
Do you think you've grown as a leader? Do you feel more confident in general?
I am a pretty confident person, so I wouldn't necessarily say I've gotten more confident. Yet, I do think I have grown as a leader. My time-management skills have increased two-fold, and I have gotten better at handling larger groups of people and bigger responsibilities.
How do you think you will be able to apply these leadership skills in other areas such as the workplace and in everyday life?
Leadership is key in every aspect of life, whether it in your home, in athletics, or at the workplace. With my future plans to become a high school English teacher and boys lacrosse coach, my experiences here at Lehigh have definitely helped me work on the skills I will need to employ within those employments.
What are your future plans?
In general I would like graduate this May, finish my masters in secondary ed and graduate again next May, find a job(wherever I can get one!) teaching high school English and coaching a HS lacrosse team, settle down, get married and have a family.
