Bats come alive in nightcap as Lehigh splits at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Liz Lucas continued her torrid start to the season, going 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to lead Lehigh to a 12-4, five inning win over Penn Friday in the second game of a doubleheader at Warren Field. The Mountain Hawks' had to settle for a split on the day as the host Quakers took game one by a 4-2 score.
 
With the split, Lehigh moves to 9-11 on the season, while Penn now stands at 6-8.
 
In the nightcap, the Mountain Hawks pounded out 16 hits and scored in all five innings that were played. Lucas and juniors Audra Wood and Tenley Halaquist ripped three hits apiece while junior Julie Fernandez and senior Carly Potock each had two.
 
Lehigh took an early 1-0 lead as Wood led off the game with a double, moved to third on a fly out and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Fernandez. Penn answered back with three runs off freshman Ashley Quigley in the bottom of the first, but the Mountain Hawks responded by scoring the next eight runs to go up 9-3.
 
In the second, Halaquist and Potock reached on back-to-back walks and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by freshman Lizzy Odren. Sophomore Rosie Roessel brought home Halaquist with a single and then Potock scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Wood. Senior Alex Cueva brought home Roessel with the go-ahead run with a single to left field.
 
Halaquist put Lehigh up 5-3 with a third-inning RBI single and then the Mountain Hawks went to work in the fourth, plating four more runs against the Quaker pitching staff. With runners on the corners and one out Lucas singled to left field, scoring Wood, while an error by Kristen Johnson allowed pinch runner Kristen Mitchell to score. Two batters later, Lucas scored on a single to left field by Halaquist. The inning was capped off with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Odren.
 
Penn got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but Lucas helped put the Quakers away with a three-run home run to center in the fifth, her fifth home run of the season, which put Lehigh up by eight.
 
Quigley was the beneficiary of the run support as she earned the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits in five innings. She walked three and struck out five as she improved to 3-6 on the season. Taylor Tieman took the loss for Penn, allowing five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
 
In Friday's first game the Mountain Hawks were limited to just five hits, as Penn broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brooke Coloma drove in the go-ahead run with a solo home run off of sophomore Rebecca Bliss.
 
Lehigh went down 2-0 after three innings, but scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jacqi Kennelly and one in the fifth on a RBI single by Cueva.
 
Mikenzie Voves earned the win for Penn allowing the two runs on four hits, while walking five and striking out two.
 
Freshman Kelsey Lee went the first 3.1 innings for Lehigh, allowing two runs on five hits. Lee walked four and struck out three before giving way to Bliss, who took the loss allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. Bliss is now 4-2.
The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule when they return to the diamond on Saturday to face Niagara in the first two games of a four-game series. First pitch for game one is set for 1:30 p.m. from Kaufman Field with live audio coverage on Lehighsports.com.
