District II consists of schools from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Also named USBWA All-District were some of the nation's top players including First Team All-Big East members Austin Freeman (Georgetown), Ashton Gibbs (Pittsburgh) and Dwight Hardy (St. John's). The honor comes only days after being named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District First Team for a second straight season.
McCollum recently wrapped up one of the most impressive seasons in school history. He averaged 21.8 points per game, which currently stands 10th in the nation. He also finished third in the Patriot League in rebounding (7.8) while his 2.5 steals per game were among the top 20 nationally. McCollum finished the season with a whopping 10 double-doubles, including one stretch of four in a row.
The Canton, Ohio native was named a First Team All-Patriot League selection for a second straight season while also garnering a spot on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team for the second time in as many seasons. He set a league single-season record with six Player of the Week awards, including one stretch of four in a row.
Earlier this season, McCollum eclipsed 1,000 career points, becoming the first active sophomore in the nation to reach that milestone. Currently at 1,308 points, he is only 916 away from the Patriot League career record. McCollum is also almost halfway to the Lehigh career scoring record (2,703) held by Daren Queenan.
Overall, the USBWA honors 10 players in each of the nine regions across the country, making McCollum one of only 90 players nationally recognized by the organization. A player and coach of the year are selected in each district as well, with St. John's Hardy and Steve Lavin earning those honors in District II.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. Today, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball.
