Mountain Hawks cruise by Army, 70-57 in WBCA Pink Zone Game

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In their annual WBCA Pink Zone game at Stabler Arena Saturday night, the Lehigh women's basketball team (16-9, 6-4) turned in one of their best performances of the season, defeating the Army Black Knights, 70-57. The Mountain Hawks have now won five games in a row and six of their last seven.
"We are starting to play with a lot of confidence right now," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. "Its big games like these that our team is stepping up for now. Our confidence is improving and we are starting to get a lot of leadership out of our seniors, which is the key."
A total of 1,531 fans attended the game, meaning Lehigh Gas will donate $1,531 dollars to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fund for breast cancer awareness. The Mountain Hawks and the Black Knights wore uniforms with pink in them to support the cause.
"We are really appreciative of Lehigh Gas and our marketing and promotions department," said Troyan. "This was a very special moment for our community and our team, especially when we have this type of crowd behind us."
Senior guard Erica Prosser was once again the story of the game, as she chipped in a game-high 20 points to go along with eight assists. Prosser averaged 19.5 points in Lehigh's two games this week after coming off her Patriot League Player of the Week honors last week.
"There is a sense of urgency to finish this season strong and win another Patriot League Championship," said Prosser. "I don't want to put the pressure on myself, but with a few games left, the rest of the seniors and I want to go out on top with a championship."
Senior forward Courtney Dentler added 11 points and three blocks in 32 minutes of action. Freshman point guard Hillary Weaver added seven points off the bench and junior forward Alexa Williams led Lehigh with nine rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
The first half was very entertaining to say the least, as Lehigh shot an incredible 8-of-12 from three point range. Sophomore Kelly Peterson came off the bench and hit two of those, one of which came at the closing seconds of the first half.
The Mountain Hawks got out to an 11-7 lead with 13:30 to go in the half. Army held a brief lead up to the 10:46 mark, but sophomore Becky Guman tied the game back up at 19 when she cashed in with a three pointer. Lehigh then jumped out to a five point lead with 4:56 to go when Dentler drained a three from the top of the key.
Then, with Lehigh leading 29-27, the Brown and White went on an 8-0 run, which was started by a fade-away jumper from senior Kristin Dalton. Prosser and Peterson then hit back-to-back threes to cap off the run and give the Mountain Hawks a 37-29 lead with 1:33 to go in the half. Another layup by Prosser and the three by Peterson at the end of the stanza put Lehigh up by 13 heading into the locker room.
From halftime on, Lehigh never looked back and maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the time. A layup by Weaver with 11:40 remaining put the Mountain Hawks up by 18, their largest lead of the game. Army would cut it down to 10 with 4:54 remaining in the game, but that is as close they would get.
For the game Lehigh shot 48.6 percent from the field, while the Black Knights were held to just 37.9 percent shooting. Lehigh made a 10 three pointers on a season-high 62.5 percent shooting from the arch. Army won the battle of the boards, 35-33.
