Lehigh swimmers and divers earn Saturday sweep of Rider

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With several impressive performances on both sides, the Lehigh swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet from Rider Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawk women picked up their first win over the Broncs under Rob Herb 169-111, while the men moved to 4-0 with a 181-119 triumph. Freshman Alyssa Leung led the way for Lehigh, winning three individual events on the day.
“Steve Fletcher and his Rider team always put up a tough battle,” Herb said. They are good. Today, however, our Lehigh team fought through every race. Everything was left in the water. They did a super job!”
Leung continued the strong start to her Lehigh career, winning the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events as well as the 200 yard individual medley. The Long Island, N.Y. native took the 100 back in 58.73 seconds, the 200 in 2:04.96 and won her final race, the 200 IM in a time of 2:11.90.
Senior Paola Simon captured the 50 free in a time of 25.15 seconds with the Mountain Hawks taking both relays, the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Leung swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay with DiDonato, Simon and sophomore Meredith Bayer also contributing to the victory. Simon also swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay with senior Priscilla Barletta and freshmen Taylor Wise and Madeline Smith also part of the team.
On the diving boards, sophomore Mercy Du competed unopposed and picked up 18 crucial points in the one and three meter events.
Aboud swept the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events, taking the 100 in 59.85 seconds and the 200 in 2:1
4.31 while Matt Ferguson finished second. Cuzzola took the 100 free in 47.35 seconds and the 200 in 1:44.51, .36 seconds faster than Toth who was edged out for the win. Toth did come back to win the 500 free in 4:43.96.
Sophomore Chris Hoke finished second to Cuzzola in the 100 free and took second behind sophomore Demetri Karedis, who won the 50 free in 21.27 seconds. Senior Kevin Shoemaker won the 200 fly in 1:54.42, while freshman Danny Bennett continued his strong work in the distance events, winning the 1000 free in 9:55.58.
The Lehigh men won both relay events as well as Aboud, Shoemaker, Karedis and freshman Martin Kendig took the 200 medley relay in 1:36.01. Cuzzola, Kendig, Hoke and freshman Jack Lorentzen won the 400 free relay in 3:12.08
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next weekend at the two-day Princeton Invitational, Friday in New Jersey.
