Mountain Hawks battle hard, but fall 5-0 at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lehigh field hockey team battled hard against Patriot League power American, but didn't have enough in a 5-0 loss on Saturday. Ranked first among “others receiving votes” in the NFHCA National Poll, the Eagles used a three-goal spurt in the first half to jump out to a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Mountain Hawks (2-9, 0-1 Patriot League) return home on Sunday when they host defending NEC Champion Rider at 1 p.m.
“We made some great passes and defensive corners, but we need to capitalize on our opportunities,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “We need to bounce back tomorrow against a very strong Rider team.”
Lehigh and American played scoreless field hockey for the first 19 minutes until the Eagles capitalized at 19:46 when Jenn Bradley found the back of the cage. American converted two more goals, at 20:34 and 22:38 to open a three-goal advantage it wouldn't relinquish.
The Mountain Hawks bounced back in the second half, earning a pair of penalty corners while firing three shots, but they couldn't beat American goalkeeper Ashley Dalisera. The Eagles made it 4-0 at 45:45 while scoring with 28 seconds remaining for the five-goal margin.
Juniors Kim Eng and Kelsey Zeswitz, senior Abby Tilton and sophomore Marie Mignogna all fired a shot for Lehigh while Mignogna also came up with a defensive save. Sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Segear was strong, making 11 saves for her third straight double-digit save performance and seventh this season
American led the final shot count, 25-4, and in penalty corners, 12-2. Segear finished with her 11 saves across Dalisera, who had two.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Sunday to host defending NEC Champion Rider at Ulrich Field. That kicks off a five-game road swing running through the middle of October.
