BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh softball program finished its 2010 season with a record of 31-19, including a 14-6 record against Patriot League opponents, good for a second place finish in the regular season standings. Although the Mountain Hawks’ streak of 11 straight league regular season titles came to an end and Lehigh was denied a third straight tournament crown, the Brown and White did manage to win at least 30 games for the tenth straight season. At season’s end, head coach Fran Troyan handed out the team awards for the 2010 season.
The Athlete of the Year Award, which is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team, was awarded to first baseman Julie Fernandez. Already a two-time All-Region selection as a sophomore, Fernandez was named the Patriot League Player of the Year and was a first-team All-Patriot League selection. Fernandez led the team and league with a .442 batting average, and tied for second in the league with 61 hits and 14 doubles.
Sophomore Jennifer Colquhoun received the Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. Colquhoun carried a 3.70 cumulative grade point average as a biochemistry major. Colquhoun, a sophomore, also earned second- team Academic All-District honors, and was named the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for softball.
On the field, Colquhoun earned first-team All-Patriot League honors for her work at shortstop. In 40 games, Lehigh’s cleanup hitter batted .303 with eight doubles, five home runs, and 34 runs batted in.
The Coaches Award, given to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement or special leadership, went to Alex Cueva. The junior third baseman earned second-team All-Patriot League honors and was a leader both on and off the field for the Mountain Hawks. Cueva batted .355 in 48 games for the Mountain Hawks, with 50 hits and 38 RBI.
Lehigh loses just three seniors to graduation and returns five All-Patriot League performers in 2011.
