Cueva, Fernandez named to All-Tournament team

BALTIMORE, Md. – Following its 1-3 showing at the UMBC Spring Classic, which wrapped up Sunday at the UMBC Softball Stadium, Lehigh placed a pair of student-athletes on the All-Tournament Team which was announced Monday afternoon. Junior third baseman Alex Cueva and sophomore first baseman Julie Fernandez represent the Mountain Hawks on the 18-player team after combining to go 10-for-25 with three RBI and five runs scored in four games for Lehigh over the weekend.
Cueva hit safely in the last three games of the weekend for Lehigh, including a 2-for-3 performance in a losing effort Saturday against Niagara. In the Mountain Hawks’ tournament finale Sunday against Delaware, Cueva went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the top of the first inning and a game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh.
For the season, Cueva ranks second among Lehigh regulars with a .367 batting average and eight RBI.
Fernandez hit safely in all four games for the Brown and White, going 6-for-14 (.429) overall, with a double, three runs scored and a RBI. She also had two hits in Saturday’s game versus Niagara and two more in a narrow 7-6 loss to Delaware on Sunday.
The Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year in 2009, Fernandez has picked up right where she left off last year, leading the Mountain Hawks with a .405 batting average (15-for-37) plus four doubles, six runs scored and six RBI.
Tournament champion Delaware placed four players on the All-Tournament team including tournament MVP Michelle Grap, who beat Lehigh on Sunday with a seventh-inning walk-off home run.
The Mountain Hawks (7-7) will open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host Penn in a doubleheader at Kaufman Field. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. and all the action can be heard live at Lehighsports.com.
