Comeback attempt not enough as Lehigh falls at Duquesne, 70-65

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team fell into an early hole, but staged a furious comeback attempt which fell just short as the Mountain Hawks dropped their season opener at Duquesne, 70-65, on Friday evening. Senior Erica Prosser led the way with 24 points while sophomore Kelly Peterson chipped in with 15.

“I thought the team played with tremendous passion in the second half, competed hard and gave themselves a chance to win,” she continued. “Kelly had a breakout game and played a key role in our comeback effort.”
Prosser's 24 points came on 7-of-15 shooting and 4-of-7 from three-point range. All 15 of Peterson's points came behind five made treys. Senior Courney Dentler also recorded eight points while junior Emily Gratch finished with six.
The Mountain Hawks got off to a slow start, falling into a 12-0 hole off the bat. Hillary Weaver broke the drought with the season's first points with 13:42 remaining in the first half. Lehigh pulled to as close as 15-7, but Duquesne responded by scoring 25 of the next 36 points to open up a 40-18 lead heading into halftime.
Duquesne maintained a 20 point lead (51-31) all the way until 11:27 left in the second half. From that point forward, Lehigh sliced 15 points off the Dukes' lead, but ran out of time. The Mountain Hawks slowly chipped away at the lead, pulling to within four at 66-62, the closest they had been since it was 4-0 in the first half. With only 36 seconds remaining, Lehigh needed to foul, and Duquesne hit enough free throws to ice the victory.
Lehigh bounced back from a tough shooting start to finish 34 percent (19-for-56) for the game. Duquesne shot at a 38 percent (23-for-60) clip. The Mountain Hawks finished 40 percent (10-for-25) from long range, led by a combined nine made three-pointers from Prosser and Peterson. Lehigh won the battle of the boards, 42-40.
The Mountain Hawks remain in Pittsburgh for a showdown at Robert Morris on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. Lehigh then enjoys a week off before its home opener on Sunday, Nov. 21 against defending Ivy League Champion Princeton.
