BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh had its hands full with a tough West Chester squad and despite a spirited performance the Golden Rams dealt the Mountain Hawks their first loss of the season 190-110 Saturday at Jacobs Pool. The loss drops Lehigh to 2-1 on the season but despite the setback there were several promising performances for the Brown and White.

“The women came to race and stayed in tow the whole day,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “Every race came down to the end, just like it should. Our women make me so proud. They never game up and made what might have been a blowout an otherwise close meet.”

Of the Mountain Hawks three event wins on the day, two came from freshmen. Giovanna Patafio took the 500 free in 5:20.15 as she bounced back from a second place finish, where she was out-touched by 0.15 seconds in the 1000 free. Late in the meet freshman Meredith Bayer won the 400 individual medley in 4:43.05.

Lehigh's best result of the day came in the 50 free where junior Alena Pollitt and Allison Montanye captured the top two spots, with Pollitt winning in 25.11 seconds.

Of the races the Mountain Hawks didn't win Lehigh did claim a number of second place finishes, including key points from second-and-third place finishes in the meet-opening 400 medley relay and a 2-3 from sophomore Emily DiDonato and freshman Stephanie Yaszemski in the 100 breaststroke.

“West Chester dominates its conference at the Division II level, but our girls did not back down,” Herb said. “We will continue to show growth and strength. It will be awesome to see our ladies continue to race against Rider.”

The Mountain Hawks have next weekend off and will return to the pool on November 6 when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. to face Rider at 1 p.m.
