Mountain Hawks drop 3-1 decision at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshman Kim Eng scored her second goal of the season and Lehigh controlled the shot and corner categories, but Bryant raced to a 2-0 halftime lead and held on to defeat the Mountain Hawks 3-1 Saturday on the Bryant Turf Field The Mountain Hawks finished with 19 shots but were once again hindered by their inability to put the ball in the back of the cage as Lehigh falls to 0-3 with the loss, while Bryant moves to 1-2 with its first win of the season.
“It has been frustrating because we’ve put ourselves in positions to score but we’re just not putting the ball in the net,” explained Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “It’s not just the forwards, it has involved everyone as a group.”
The Bulldogs needed just three minutes to take a 1-0 lead as Courtney Landi netted an unassisted goal, her second of the season. Bryant extended its lead at the 22:22 mark as Alexandra Czerniak scored off a feed from Elise Boissoneau. Lehigh out-shot Bryant 11-6 in the first 35 minutes and had a 6-4 edge in penalty corners but the Bulldogs led 2-0 at the break.
Eng put Lehigh on the scoreboard six and a half minutes into the second half with a high shot to the right side of the cage from ten yards out. The Mountain Hawks pressed for an equalizer, but Boissoneau banged home a rebound with just under 12 minutes to play to give the Bulldogs some breathing room.
Lehigh finished the game with a 19-12 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in penalty corners. Eng fired a team-best seven shots for the Mountain Hawks while sophomore Caitlin Donnelly added four.
“We had 11 corners,” said Mazer. “At one point we had six in a row before they had any. We must finish when we are given opportunities. We have to find a way to put a complete game together as a team.”
Junior Jessica Miller played the first half in goal, allowing two goals, before giving way to Lilia Stefaniwsky who allowed one goal and made three saves in the second half. Kundayi Mawema made seven saves for Bryant.
The Mountain Hawks are off until Saturday September 12, when they are scheduled to open up their new field at the Ulrich Sports Complex against Georgetown. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
