Lehigh held scoreless in sweep at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Lehigh’s two game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday as the Mountain Hawks bats went cold in dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Delaware at Delaware Field. Despite out-hitting the Fightin’ Blue Hens by a 6-3 margin Lehigh dropped the opening game 1-0, while in the nightcap freshman Amanda Stacevicz held the Mountain Hawks to just one hit as Delaware prevailed 3-0. The losses drop Lehigh’s record to 10-10, while Delaware improves to 4-8 on the season.
Game one was a pitcher’s duel between Lehigh senior Lisa Sweeney and Delaware’s Anne Marie Pagano. The Fightin’ Blue Hens broke through with the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs Mary Ann Magee reached on an infield single and catcher Quinn Megargel followed with a double to centerfield that scored pinch-runner Samantha Pettie from first base.
The Mountain Hawks had base-runners in six of seven innings, but left seven runners on base as Lehigh was kept off the scoreboard for the first time this season. Six different players had a hit in the opener for Lehigh, led by freshman Julie Fernandez who smacked her team-leading seventh double in the first inning.
Pagano struck out six in a winning effort to earn the win, improving to 3-3 on the season. Sweeney was dealt a hard-luck loss, allowing a run on just three hits while striking out eight as she falls to 6-5.
In game two, Delaware capitalized on a pair of Lehigh errors to push across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Sophomore Alex Cueva delivered Lehigh’s lone hit, a single in the third inning, but Stacevicz was able to keep the Mountain Hawks in check for the rest of the game. The Delaware freshman allowed two walks and struck out four for her first win of the year (1-4).
Delaware scored its third run on an RBI single by Megargle in the fourth inning.
Junior Tiffany Curtis took the loss for Lehigh, as she falls to 4-3. Curtis allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out six and walking five.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they head to the Main Line for a doubleheader against Villanova. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
