March will not be alone this season however, as senior co-captain Alexis Foucek, who battled through an injury last year, returns at full strength to provide solid depth and leadership. Foucek had her best match of the ’03-04 season at the Kutztown Spring Invitational, where she placed sixth with a round of 88. When healthy, Foucek has shown that she can be one of the best golfers on the team, as evidenced by her team best round of 89 at the Kutztown Invitational two seasons ago as a sophomore.
Senior Moriah Britt also returns after a junior season that saw her capture 13th place honors at the Kutztown Invitational. Britt has improved her game every season and will look to continue that trend in this her final season as a Mountain Hawk. Junior Lauren Barton placed second at both the Kutztown Fall Invite and the Muhlenberg Invitational, while also posting a sixth place finish at the Lehigh Quad, so she too will be looked at to make a big impact. Barton exhibited superior skills from the time she set foot on the greens at Lehigh, as her 18-hole scores placed either first or second on the team in four matches as a freshman.
A pair of sophomores, Kassia Nelson and Taylor Sauer, both had outstanding freshman campaigns for the Mountain Hawks, led by Nelson who was the team’s Coaches Award recipient. Nelson also placed fifth at the Kutztown Fall Invite, fourth at the Lehigh Quad and fourth at the McDaniel Invite. Nelson grew stronger as the season wore on and will only get better with time. Sauer also improved and had some impressive showings throughout in ‘03’04. She tied for 14th at the Kutztown Spring Invite and also came in 11th place at the Muhlenberg Invite with a round of 102.
Other Mountain Hawk returnees looking to make an impact will be junior Ashley Fitzgerald and sophomore Caitlin Colvin. Incoming freshmen Paige Cullen, Amanda Furiasse, Kelly Gordon, Allison Juster, Yvonne Kukora, Mary Meehan, Tina Olsson, Kelly Pettijohn and Alison Webb have the chance to learn from some talented veterans, as well as contribute to the team from the start.
The team will once again play their matches at the beautiful, yet challenging, Saucon Valley Country Club, which is close enough to Lehigh’s campus that the team can also practice and improve their skills there.
Spring play gets underway with the annual spring break trip, followed by the Kutztown Invite on March 22 at Berkleigh Country Club.
