The Lehigh men’s and women’s golf teams gathered at head coach Kelly Gutshall’s house on Monday, April 28 to reflect upon the past year and celebrate the team’s accomplishments. Several student-athletes were honored for their efforts both in the classroom and on the golf course.
Freshman Sarah March and sophomore Patrick McCahill were recognized as their team’s Athlete of the Year. The Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. March led the women’s squad in all three tournaments played during the spring. McCahill was an All-Patriot League selection after finishing fifth at the 2003 Patriot League golf championship.
The Scholar-Athlete Award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. The women’s winner was senior Danielle Kochenour, while the men selected junior Drew LaVine.
The final award handed out was the Coaches Award. The Coaches Award is presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. The men’s winner was senior Rob McMenimon, while the women’s honoree was freshman Lauren Barton. Both were recognized for their hard work and improvement on the golf course.
Finally, the men’s and women’s team captains for the 2003-2004 season were named as well. The men will be led by rising junior Patrick McCahill and senior-to-be Drew LaVine. For the women, senior Danielle Kochenour and junior Alexis Foucek will lead the team for the second straight year in 2003-04.
