University Park, PA – Lehigh traveled west on Saturday to Penn State to compete in the Jim Thorpe Meet and several Mountain Hawks posted memorable performances. Lehigh had to recover fast for its meet at Penn State, following the Lehigh Valley Invitational on Friday afternoon at Goodman Campus, where both the men and the women posted impressive showings.
Senior George Evans continues to impress on the track, this time taking first place in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 10.96. Evans also won that race at the Lehigh Valley Championships on Friday. In the 3000-meter run, sophomore Tyler Spencer and junior captain Alex Hudgins came in third and fourth place respectively. Spencer crossed the finish line in a time of 8:52.68, while Hudgins paced himself with a time of 8:53.43.
Senior Todd Scurci ran away with the title in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:53.90, while fellow senior Jesse Ohm leaped his way to a third place finish in the pole vault with a score of 4.25 meters.
On the women’s side, sophomore Karen Welby raced her way to a first place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.25, and she was joined by fellow sophomore Tracie Fails with a fifth place finish, crossing the line in a time of 2:24.07. Sophomore Lauren Barrett came up just short in the javelin throw, recording a toss of 42.59 meters, just over one meter out of the top spot. Junior Andrea Luebbe continued her fast start to the season, crossing the finish line in a time of 10:51.57 in the 3000-meter run.
Lehigh’s next meet is Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Easton, to take on archrival Lafayette. That meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00.
