Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh opened its 2003 indoor season on Friday evening by hosting Millersville at Rauch Fieldhouse, and the Mountain Hawks came out strong, putting up very impressive numbers across the board. Leading the way was sophomore Vaclav Malek with a school record high jump of 6’10”. The closest competitor only cleared 6’8”.
Other Mountain Hawks doing well were senior Lavar Pope, who came in first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.7 seconds, freshman Greg Horn, who ran the 800-meter run in a time of 2:06, good for first place. On the women’s side, senior Katie Dukatz cleared 5’2” to take home first place in the high jump, while freshman Nicole Montegary crossed the finish line in a time of 1:22 in the 500 meter run, which put her in first place.
Head Coach Matt Utesch was pleased with the performance of his younger team members and of course of the record setting Malek. “Our freshman stepped big for us tonight and had a big meet. Vaclav just did awesome, he had an outstanding night.”
Lehigh now has several weeks off to train and will return to the track on January 10, when the Mountain Hawks travel to Lewisburg to compete in the Art Gulden Invitational.
