Barone captures three titles at PL Championships

Hamilton, NY – Senior Justina Barone won three individual titles and three school records and was rewarded by being named the women's Field Athlete of the Meet at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships. Mountain Hawk athletes set seven school records at the games, as the Lehigh women would finish fourth and the men placed fifth. Barone won one title on each day of the championships. On Friday night, the senior captured the women’s pentathlon with a record setting 3739 points. The following day, she added a high jump crown to her weekend, clearing 5’ 5". In the 55m hurdles, Barone set her second school record of the weekend, running a time of 8.11 en route to her third league title. Barone also added a third place finish and a third school record in the 500m, completing the race in 1:16.13. Barone’s pentathlon record was her second in the multi-event this season, bettering her mark of 3649 at the Lehigh Pentathlon. Her time in the hurdles bested the old record of 8.44 set in 1999 by Tara Santoroski. In the 500m, her time beat the prior time of 1:17.65 set last season by Maggie Miller. Sophomore Lindsay Hinsch set a pair of records in the jumps, finishing second in both events. Hinsch leaped 18’ 4 ¼" to beat the previous record of 17’11 ¾" in the long jump. Hinsch would also break her own record in the triple jump, hopping, skipping and jumping 37’8" to break the record she set against Millersville. Hinsch also added a third place finish in the 60m, crossing the line in 7.40. The women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team finished with a time of 9:26.12, well ahead of the six year old record of 9:34.93. Other standouts on the women’s side included senior Yasmin Deliz, who finished second in the shot put (43’ 3 ¾"), and junior Katie Dukatz, who placed second to only Barone in the high jump (5’ 5"). Senior Maureen Schaub placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:17.84 As a team, the Lehigh women scored 90 to earn their fourth place finish. Bucknell was the overall women’s team championship with a score of 180. On the men’s side, junior George Evans set a school record in the 55m dash during the semifinals, running a 6.35. Evans would go on to place second in the finals of the 55m with a time of 6.43. His record topped the old time of 6.40 set in 1992 by Horace Hamm. Senior Chris Lambert came up just short in his bid for a third pentathlon title, placing second with a score of 3557. Sophomore Francis Vincent placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Vincent’s mark of 48’ 0 ¾" was good for second place in the triple jump, while his jump of 22’ 7" was the third best mark in the long jump competition. Junior Jesse Ohm placed second in the pole vault, clearing 15’ 3". Sophomore Nick Maiorino had the second longest throw in the men’s shot put with his toss of 47’ 7". In the men’s 5000, sophomore Mark Swanson ran a 14:49 to finish third, just :04 behind the winning time. Lehigh finished with 61 points, good for fifth. The team champion was Army with a total of 191. The Mountain Hawks get a week off before qualifying athletes travel to the ECAC/IC4A Championships on February 28 – March 1.
