Bethlehem, PA – The Lehigh men and women both finished 15th at the 29th Paul Short Run at the Goodman campus on Saturday. Freshman Rob Hampson was the top finisher amongst Mountain Hawk Runners, placing 53rd in the men’s 8K with a time of 25:40.05.

The Brown & White women had excellent grouping, with just :36 between their first five runners. Junior Chrissy Boyd was the first member of the Brown & White to cross the finish line with a time of 23:12.49. Freshman Jenna Breidinger was the next Lehigh finisher in 80th place, finishing in 23:24.99. On Breidinger’s heels in 82nd and 83rd were seniors Maureen Schaub and Edann Brady. Schaub crossed the line in 23:25.83 and Brady followed in 23:26.24. Jillian Koste was the final Lehigh scorer. The freshman placed 103rd with her time of 23:48.94.

"The women had a tremendous split from one to five," head coach Deb Utesch said. "They did well to beat Colgate and closed the gap with Lafayette. They are on the verge of making the regional rankings."

The men’s race saw Hampson top Mountain Hawk finishers for the second time this season. Fellow freshman Tyler Spencer was the second Lehigh finisher with his time of 26:18.90 to finish 92nd. Pursuing Spencer was sophomore Mark Swanson, who placed 97th when he ended his day with a time of 26:24.05. Finishing back-to-back and rounding out the scoring contingent were sophomore Alex Hudgins and freshman Ryan O’Donnell. Hudgins was 111th at 26:42.29, while O’Donnell was less than a second later with his 26:43.11 finish.

"Hampson had a very strong finish, he made up 20-30 places in the last two miles and had a great race," noted Utesch. "Overall, the men looked flat as a team. We’re at the end of our base training, and they were running on tired legs. They should actually get fresher from here on."

Penn State walked off the women’s team title, while William & Mary won the men’s competition. The Nittany Lion women became just the fifth team to repeat as Paul Short champion and Penn State becomes the first school to accomplish the feat twice as it also took consecutive titles in 1981 and 1982. A pair of runners from second place teams walked off with individual honors. Megan Metcalfe of West Virginia won the women’s race with her time of 20:51.94. Columbia’s Steve Sundell was the victor in the men’s competition, with a time of 24:28.20.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday, October 4th when the men and women host Lafayette in a dual meet. The men start at 5:00, followed by the women at 5:45.
