Three track athletes earn Ashe awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Seven Lehigh student-athletes were recently recognized as recipients of the 2009 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award. The seven winners included Jillian Randolph (women’s track and field), Evans Kosgei (men’s track and field),Shannon Alejandro (women’s track and field), Roxy Jahangeri (women’s soccer), Quadir Carter (football), Anne Rodriguez (women’s swimming), Marquis Hall (men’s basketball). Hall, Rodriguez and Randolph were First-Team selections, while Carter and Kosgei earned Second-Team recognition, Jahangeri earned a spot on the Third-Team, and Alejandro was an Honorable Mention selection. The seven selections are the most Lehigh has ever had.
A marketing major, Randolph carries a 3.81 GPA and she placed in the top-ten of the 800-meter run at the 2009 Patriot League Outdoor championship, while also running one leg of the 4x400 relay. An IBE major, Kosgei maintains a 3.96 grade point average and he competed in the 5000 and 10,000 meter runs at the 2009 Patriot League Outdoor championships. Kosgei also posted a 12th place finish at the 2008 Patriot League Cross Country championship.
Alejandro garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors this past year in cross country and indoor track and field, and was a member of the 4x800 relay team that won the event at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field championship and placed second at the outdoor championship. Alejandro maintains a 3.28 GPA as a biology major.
Jahangeri is a finance major with a 3.20 grade point average and she appeared in 15 games during the 2008 season, starting two of them. The Virginia native was credited with five shots, including two on goal. A 2008 honorable mention All-American and First-Team All-Patriot League selection, Carter recently graduated from Lehigh with a 3.28 grade point average in sociology/social psychology. Carter finished the 2008 season with 81 total tackles, including 5.5-for-loss, one sack, two interceptions and three pass breakups.
Rodriguez earns her second consecutive Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award. She carries a 3.71 GPA as an English major and is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Hall was named Lehigh’s first-ever Patriot League Men’s Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year this past season. A 2009 First-Team All-Patriot League selection, Hall averaged 13.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game and maintains a 3.40 grade point average as a finance major. This marks the second consecutive year Hall has received this honor.
The Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award is given to student-athletes of color who exemplify high standards in academics, athletics, and service to the community. The winners must meet the following criteria: have completed one full academic year at their respective institutions, earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, be an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team, and demonstrated a record of campus or community service.
