Eleven named to Academic Honor Roll

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh placed eleven student-athletes on the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Academic Honor Roll, announced by the league on Thursday. Senior Kate Paine led the way for the Mountain Hawks, with a 3.98 grade point average in the spring semester. To be eligible for the honor roll, a student-athlete must obtain at least a 3.2 GPA and be awarded a varsity letter in his or her sport.

Paine, who earned her degree in history in May, had the top GPA among the six Lehigh women named to the honor roll. Classmate Betsy Balaguer, an all-league selection for her prowess in the pool, joined Paine on the honor roll, as did junior Sherri Pickens and freshmen Liz Murray, Anne Rodriguez and Claire Winiarski.

The Mountain Hawks place five student-athletes on the men’s honor roll, with freshman Ryan Guttormsen leading the way with a 3.72 GPA in the College of Business and Economics. Guttormsen is joined by juniors Clark Cohen and Calvin Smiley, sophomore Darren Podolak and freshman Kevin McGrath. Cohen and McGrath, like Balaguer, added academic honors to earlier all-league selections.

In all, 177 student-athletes: 81 men and 96 women were named to the swimming and diving honor roll. Earlier this year, Lehigh’s Tom Gilbert ’07 named the men’s swimming and diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Navy’s Kelly Zahalka was named the women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
