Mountain Hawks swept by Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh swimmers and divers returned the pool as a full unit for the first time in 2006 but the Mountain Hawks were swept by Patriot League foe Army Saturday afternoon at Crandall Pool. The Mountain Hawk women fell by a 155-87 score, while the men were defeated 157-83. Lehigh’s men saw their record drop to 2-4 on the season, while the women now stand at 1-6 on the year.

Mountain Hawk swimmers won just four of the 26 events in the dual meet against the Black Knights, who are perennially one of the top teams in the Patriot League.

On the women’s side, senior Linda Hendrixson won the 1650 yard freestyle in a time of 18:09.45. Sophomore Allie Valasek made it a 1-2 finish for the Brown and White in the 1650 free, touching the wall 40 seconds behind Hendrixson. Junior Julie Mitchell was Lehigh’s other female race-winner as she took the 100 yard backstroke in 2:10.15.

Sophomore Jonathan Kearney made it a Lehigh sweep of the 1650, as he took top honors in the men’s event in a time of 16:25.40. The Mountain Hawks’ other win came in the 400 yard free relay as freshman Dan Johnson, sophomores Whit Shufelt and Michael Hay, and senior Dan Buschmann took the top spot in 3:16.18. Lehigh relay teams finished 1-2-3 in the event.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday, January 28 when they play host to La Salle. The meet gets underway at 1:00 from Lehigh’s Jacobs Pool.
