BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a weekend in which the Lehigh men picked up their first victory of the season, a pair of Mountain Hawks were honored Tuesday as the Patriot League handed out its weekly swimming and diving awards. Sophomore Jonathan Kearney was named the league’s Male Swimmer of the Week, while classmate Clark Cohen was recognized as the Male Diver of the Week. Both played a major role in the Mountain Hawks’ 165-135 win over Colgate on Saturday, Lehigh’s first of the 2005-06 season.
Kearney won three individual events against the Raiders on Saturday and also was part of a second place relay team. The Wayne, Pa. native won the 1000 yard free in a time of 10:06.99, almost ten seconds ahead of the second place finisher. He followed that up by winning the 200 fly in a time of 1:57.26 and the 500 free in 4:56.77. The defending Patriot League champion in the 1650 yard free, Kearney also teamed with freshman Dan Johnson and seniors Sean Herman and Dan Buschmann to finish second in the 400 free relay.
Cohen earns Diver of the Week honors for the first time after sweeping the diving events for a second straight week. The Bradford, Pa. native won the one meter dive with a personal best score of 265.90, over 60 points better than second place. Cohen followed up with a 268.65 score en route to first place in the three meter dive.
The Mountain Hawks return to the pool on Saturday when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers and the Rider Broncs in a three team meet. Lehigh’s men sit at 1-1 on the season, while the Mountain Hawk women are seeking their first victory of the season. The meet gets underway at noon from Philadelphia.
