Bethlehem, PA - The Mountain Hawks swimming and diving teams were picked to finish in the top three of the Patriot League 2001-2002 preseason poll of head coaches and sports information directors.
Lehigh's women's swimming and diving team was picked to win its third straight Patriot League Title.
The women's team received ten first place votes to finish at the top with 91 points. Navy edged out newcomer American by a vote of 70-77, although the Eagles did receive one more first place vote than the Midshipmen. Bucknell followed close behind in fourth with 68 points. Army, Colgate, Lafayette and Holy Cross rounded out the poll.
The Mountain Hawks went 6-4 last year and captured their second Patriot League Title. Senior co captain Lauren Aryes returns to the lineup for the Mountain Hawks. Aryes is a member of the Patriot League All-Decade Team and was recognized as Patriot League Swimmer of the Meet in 2000. She has been named All-Patriot League each of her three years swimming for Lehigh. Junior co captain Laura Gabrynowicz has also earned All-Patriot League status. Gabrynowicz holds the school record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:57.50. Other key returnees for the Mountain Hawks include sophomore Lindsey Kokel and junior Katy Hunchar.
The men's team received one first place vote and 54 points to finish third behind newcomer American University. The defending Patriot League men's swimming and diving champion, Army was picked to finish first. Bucknell and Colgate finished close in the poll at fourth and fifth place. The Bison notched 39 points to edge out the Raiders, who recorded 35. Lafayette and Holy Cross closed out the poll at sixth and seventh.
The Mountain Hawks went 6-4 last season and tabbed a second place league finish. Leading Lehigh will be junior captain Ian Gillen, who owns the school record in the 200 back. Gillen is also member of the record holding 400 free relay team, as well as the 200 and 400 medley relay teams. Junior Lou Bosurgi, a two time All-League selection, was last year's Patriot League Swimmer of the Meet. Junior Bing Padmasankha and senior Rocco Colabella are also key returnees for the Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks open up their season Saturday at Drexel in non-league action. The meet is set to begin at 1:00.
