BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For nearly a month, the Lehigh swimming and diving teams have been hard at work in and out of the waters of Lehigh’s Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks have been training hard and have added more cross-fit training to their preseason regimen. With the season opening meet just over two weeks away, Lehigh head coach Rob Herb is pleased with what he’s seen as his program gets set to host its annual Brown and White Meet and its Alumni Meet this weekend.
“We’re very excited to begin our season,” said Herb, who begins his fifth season as head coach. “In the off-season and preseason we’ve tried out some new training methods, with a heavier emphasis on cross-fit training. Our results have been very positive so far, and because of that the teams, the coaches and the alumni are all excited to get things going.”
The Mountain Hawks have been in the pool on an almost daily basis, with early morning workouts complementing the afternoon practices three days a week. Along with the normal in-water workouts and stretching, the team has added the new dynamic of the cross-fit training and has been able to bring some of those key principles into the pool.
The weekend activity begins Friday evening with the annual brown and white swim meet, which serves as the first opportunity for the Mountain Hawks in race like situations. Competition is expected to be friendly, yet fierce, as Herb has divided his squad and allowed the captains to pick sides for the annual inter-squad meet.
Saturday, Lehigh welcomes back former head coach and Alumni Association director Chris Marshall ’88 with the dedication of the Marshall Wall of Champions in Jacobs Pool. More than 100 guests, including alumni, family and friends are expected to attend the dedication, with Lehigh’s annual Alumni Meet to follow shortly thereafter. Among those expected to return on Saturday are school record holders Paul and Dave Littlefield, Jeff Cline and a number of returnees from the classes of 2006, 2007 and 2008.
“This weekend will mostly be about welcoming back Chris Marshall and welcoming back our terrific swimming and diving alumni,” said Herb. “We are looking forward to our annual Brown and White meet on Friday though. We want to take a look at our teams in a race atmosphere which the meet provided. Hopefully, the freshmen will get the most out of this experience as they compete as part of our crew for the first time in a competitive environment.”
Lehigh will officially open the 2008-09 season on Saturday, October 18 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Providence.
