Two one-run wins move Lehigh to 8-0

Sweeney’s one out fifth inning single plated senior Kate Marvel, who had two of Lehigh’s seven hits, to break a 2-2 tie.
Freshman Briana Gaumer started in the circle for the Mountain Hawks, and after being staked to a 1-0 lead, yielded a two run home run to Ali Shepherd, which put the Explorers ahead. Lehigh tied the game in the third inning when freshman Alex Cueva was issued a bases loaded walk. Gaumer held
Sophomore Tiffany Curtis relieved Gaumer in the fourth inning and proceeded to retire all 12 batters she faced. Curtis struck out six to earn her third victory of the season (3-0), while DJ Guinn suffered the loss for the Explorers in their season opener.
Monday’s second game turned into a classic pitchers duel between Sweeney and Valpo’s Andrea Zappia. The Crusaders mustered just a second inning single from Shannon Robinson against Sweeney, who struck out the side in the fourth and seventh innings on her way to a 14 strikeout effort and her second one-hit shutout of the season. Sweeney (4-0) has not allowed an earned run in her first 24 innings of work this season.
Offensively, Lehigh received leadoff singles from seniors Marvel and Megan Conrad in the first and third innings. After seven scoreless frames, the international tiebreaker was implemented and each team began its half of the eighth with a runner on second base. Sweeney recorded her final two strikeouts with the go ahead run on third base. In Lehigh’s half of the eighth, Lewis delivered a pinch-hit two out single to right field, scoring freshman Carly Potock with the winning run and keeping Lehigh unbeaten in eight games.
The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will meet again in Lehigh’s first game Tuesday at 1 p.m. Lehigh will also face
