On the field, Lehigh’s leadoff hitter and centerfielder set the table for the Mountain Hawks’ record-setting 43-14 campaign in 2006. Marvel batted .360 on the year en route to becoming a first team Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She led the Patriot League with nine triples and ranked second nationally in triples per game. Marvel finished second in the Patriot League with 62 hits and also scored 28 runs and swiped a league best 11 bases.
“When we recruited Kate out of Red Bank Catholic, we knew we had a special person,” said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “This award really exemplifies the fact that she is not only a tremendous scholar but also a tremendous softball player. The fact of the matter is she’s a tremendous person.”
Marvel becomes the fourth Lehigh softball player overall and the third in the last four years to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Shana Treon received the award in 2004, with Stephanie Digneo earning the honor the year before. Karen Kascinski was named top softball Scholar-Athlete in 1995.
In just two seasons Marvel has accumulated 112 hits and has scored 55 runs while batting .334. She has been a key contributor on Lehigh’s Patriot League championship teams in each of the last two years. Marvel picked up five hits and scored three runs in the 2006 NCAA Amherst regional, where Lehigh became the first Patriot League school to win two games in an NCAA regional.
Also Friday, the Patriot League announced its softball Academic Honor Roll of which Marvel was one of a league-best 15 Mountain Hawks recognized for their work in the classroom in the spring semester. Marvel was one of five Lehigh softball players to earn a 3.90 grade point average or better in the spring. Junior Whitney Schenbeck was one of three Patriot League softball student-athletes to earn a 4.00, while senior Ali Linsk, junior Julie Sterrett and sophomore Megan Conrad were all over 3.9.
To be eligible for the Honor Roll, a student-athlete must obtain at least a 3.2 GPA and be awarded a varsity letter in his or her sport. In all, 51 Patriot League softball players qualified for the Honor Roll, with Lehigh leading the way with 15 selections.
